“Hurry, hurry! There’s a hostage situation at the barbecue place across the street!”
“Are you kidding me? Who would be crazy enough to pull something like that right in front of the police station?”
“Let’s go!”
Brandon had barely finished his lunch and stepped inside when his coworker grabbed him and dragged him straight back out.
They rushed over, weaving through the crowd that had already gathered. Brandon craned his neck for a look inside, and what he saw made his stomach drop.
Wait—is that…?
“That’s Patricia, isn’t it? Seriously, what are the chances? We just keep running into her,” muttered the colleague who’d been working the Emerson case with him.
Brandon didn’t answer. His eyes were glued to the hand clamped around Patricia’s neck.
She must’ve tied her hair up while she was eating, but now, pinned down, a few messy strands had slipped loose and dangled dangerously close to the grill, sizzling and popping as they hit the hot surface.
She looked completely wrecked—nothing like the fierce, untouchable woman he’d seen just a few hours ago on the top floor of Martin Group.
Aiden and Sara burst in a moment later, both of them freezing in shock.
Aiden snapped out of it first and fumbled for his phone, calling Oliver with shaking hands.
“Didn’t she always have those two bodyguards with her? How did anyone even get close?”
“With that kind of awareness, what kind of bodyguards are they supposed to be?”
Brandon’s coworker wouldn’t stop running his mouth, and Brandon shot him a sharp look. “How about you say that a little louder?”
That shut him up in a hurry.
Patricia’s hand shook uncontrollably as she gripped the edge of the table.
