“Of course I have my own reasons. Without them, how else could I have stood by Miss’s side for decades, always loyal?”
Hector wasn’t letting up, his voice cutting straight through the tension.
“Seriously, what husband would put up with another man hanging around his wife, especially one who obviously has his own agenda? You and Patricia are together all the time. If Oliver was really as controlling as you say, the first thing he’d do is send you packing.”
He lifted his hand, cutting off whatever Jackson was about to say. “There’s no point in us arguing about this.”
“So that’s it? You get the last word? Why does having personal motives always have to mean romantic feelings? Can’t it just be loyalty or family?”
“Just remember—everyone has their place. Relationships work like a job, and everyone needs to stick to their lane. The moment people start acting on their own ideas, picking sides, everything falls apart.”
“So you step in to feel good about yourself, but then what? In the end, it’s their marriage—they’re the ones who have to deal with it behind closed doors.”
The argument in the living room had barely faded when Hector’s phone rang.
Lincoln’s voice came through, tense. “Mr. McKee, Kent’s been taken in by the police. As for Mrs.—”
“Try Mr. Padilla,” Hector cut in.
Lincoln hesitated. “I tried, sir. He’s not answering.”
Hector sighed, phone in hand. Not surprising, he thought. Who knows what’s going on upstairs right now.
“Just head home. We’ll talk about this in the morning.”
He hung up and looked at Jackson, who let out a cold laugh. As he walked out, Jackson muttered, “Nothing’s really solved, is it?”
