You Looked Down on Me Once Now You Look Up (Patricia and Oliver) novel Chapter 737

Patricia watched him for a long moment before finally breaking the silence. “If you have something to say, just say it.”

Just say it? He couldn’t. Patricia already thought he tried to control her too much. Even if he was burning up inside, he kept reminding himself that they’d only just made up. If they started arguing again, whatever was left of their relationship might just fall apart. Then what would be left for the two of them?

Oliver bit back the questions on the tip of his tongue, fighting the urge to let them spill out.

“There’s nothing,” he said, tossing the towel he’d been using onto the counter, pretending not to care. “All done.”

Patricia left the bathroom. Oliver lingered in front of the mirror, staring at the tense, guarded face that looked back at him. He let out a tired sigh and rubbed his hand over his face. He was making himself miserable with all these doubts. He knew better than anyone that there was nothing possible between Patricia and Theo, not in this lifetime, but still…

At ten, Oliver actually got into bed early for once. Patricia was propped up against the headboard, video calling her grandma. He joined the conversation for a bit, chatting with her grandma until they hung up close to ten thirty. Normally, that was when Patricia would start winding down for the night.

She slipped under the covers, getting comfortable. But before she could settle in, Oliver pressed up behind her, his chest warm against her back. The heat of his skin made her tense up. He brushed her hair away from her shoulder. After all these years together, Patricia knew exactly what that meant. He wanted more.

“I’m a little tired tonight.”

He paused, his hand resting on her waist, absentmindedly tracing circles. “What kept you busy today?”

“Meetings, one after another this afternoon. Then I went out to look at some furniture.”

He didn’t buy it. Right away, Oliver suspected she was hiding something.

“And?”

“And what?” Patricia looked at him, confused, rolling over to face him. “You’ve been acting weird all night. Ever since dinner, you’ve been off. If you want to ask something, just ask.”

“Next Monday.”

“Find out the location for me,” Patricia said. She was definitely planning to show up.

“Oh, and there’s something else…” Colby glanced out at the community workers waiting outside her office, looking uncertain. She never expected them to find their way to Martin Group. If Jackson hadn’t filled her in about Patricia’s grandma, she’d probably have made a mistake today.

“Go ahead.”

“The community workers came to the company. They want to talk to you about your grandma.”

Patricia’s expression darkened.
