“But…”
“Brandon, you don’t want to get married, you don’t want to date, and you’re not interested in work either. So what do you actually want?”
The boss’s words left Brandon with nothing to say. Other people could use family as an excuse, but he had nothing. With nowhere to hide, he had to accept the transfer.
Thursday morning, Patricia didn’t rush into the office. Instead, she sent Jackson to track down Brandon and get the truth about Tina’s case. Was the prosecution being fast-tracked, or was someone trying to protect her?
Brandon’s reaction when he saw Jackson was a mix of confusion and frustration. After a long pause, all he managed was, “Do you really think a husband and wife just share a bed and never talk?”
Jackson blinked. “So you’re saying Mr. Padilla’s the one pulling strings on this case?”
“I’m not sure, but that’s probably it.”
Jackson passed everything Brandon said straight to Patricia.
Patricia had just arrived at work. She’d barely opened a new file Colby had dropped off about Skyline Entertainment. Setting it aside, she asked, “Anything else?”
Jackson didn’t sugarcoat it. “He said you and Mr. Padilla must be just sharing a bed, not even talking.”
Normally, he would’ve grumbled about Mr. Padilla being overbearing or bossy, but he’d learned to keep his mouth shut. Aiden was right. Patricia might not care about his comments, but Oliver probably would. Maybe that’s why he’d been moved in the first place. Being a decent person was a struggle.
Soon after Jackson left, Patricia asked for the car and went to Pacific Capital. She only called Oliver when she was already parked downstairs.
He saw right away Patricia was annoyed. He straightened his suit pants and crouched in front of her. “You waited a long time.”
Patricia nodded. “Yeah, pretty long.”
“I’m sorry. The meeting was complicated, and everyone was really involved. I couldn’t just call for a break and leave.”
She nodded again.
Oliver sat beside her and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her onto his lap. Patricia just sat there, stiff and upright, not leaning into him at all. Oliver’s heart tightened. “What’s wrong? Did I keep you waiting so long you’re upset?”
