When Patricia walked into the bathroom, she caught Marian turning off the water and fishing a bath sachet from the tub.
“You should let the staff take care of this,” Patricia said. “It’s late, you ought to get some rest.”
Marian just smiled, tossing the herbal pouch in the trash. “They’re all thumbs, I don’t trust them with this. The weather’s chilly lately, so I had Johns pick up some wild mugwort from the countryside. A soak will help chase away the cold.”
Patricia wrinkled her nose at the scent, not entirely thrilled.
Marian tried to coax her. “Mugwort’s good stuff. Wild and fresh, drives away the bad, keeps you healthy. Don’t turn your nose up at it.”
“I’m not,” Patricia said, though she half-worried she’d step out of the tub a different color.
“I cooked some bird’s nest soup with white fungus,” Marian said. “I’ll bring you a bowl. Eat a little, then get some proper sleep.”
After her bath, Patricia rinsed off quickly. Just as she stepped out, she saw Marian coming into the living room with the dessert.
“Did you settle things with Ruby?” Patricia asked.
“It’ll take a few more days. I need to wrap things up at work.”
Marian sat across from her, leaning in a little, her voice soft and gentle. “That’s not too long then.” She paused, watching Patricia’s face before shifting topics. “Sara messaged me today. She said she’s craving my braised pork trotters. I wonder when they’ll be back.”
Patricia’s spoon paused halfway to her lips. She glanced at Marian with a tight smile. “You’re not really talking about Sara, are you?”
Marian laughed quietly. “You’re too sharp. It’s normal for couples to argue, but if you let things cool off too much, it turns into a real problem. When you’re done with work these next few days, you should bring Mr. Padilla home.”
“Me? Go get him?” Patricia shot back. “I wasn’t the one who told him to leave. Why are you always taking his side?”
The next morning, Marian got up to make breakfast, only to hear from the night staff that Patricia had left early. She’d said she wouldn’t be home for dinner that night either.
Patricia was busy. She had Ruby’s mess to clean up. She had to act fast.
By the end of the day, people from Martin Group’s finance and legal departments had already shown up at Skyline Entertainment.
Ruby had been missing for two days. She hadn’t been to the office since yesterday, and no one could reach her. Without her around, nothing at the company was getting done and the staff were running around in circles.
The legal team tried to find her, but came up empty.
When Colby came to report, Patricia finally looked up from her computer, her words clear and direct. “Go to her house. And get in touch with the detention center. I want to see Tina.”
