“Aunt Patricia, did you miss me? It’s been, like, forever!”
Patricia nodded, her smile gentle. “Of course I did.” She waved at Jaxon and the others as they came in.
In the hospital room’s lounge, Selara hooked her arm through Patricia’s and lowered her voice. “The whole family heard you two had a fight. They’re freaking out. Mom was this close to flying over just to slap Oliver herself. He’s always had a temper. You must have had a tough time.”
Patricia shook her head. “I’m not perfect either.”
“Aunt Patricia, you? Please. Uncle Oliver’s the real problem,” Sara piped up from the couch. She scooted closer, her face earnest. “You don’t think he’s just pretending to be pitiful, do you?”
“I have no idea,” Patricia said quietly.
Selara poked Sara’s forehead. “I checked, okay? He’s not faking it. The medical records are legit.”
“Mom, are you just pretending to take Aunt Patricia’s side? Are you actually sticking up for Uncle Oliver?”
“Enough,” Selara snapped. “Out.”
Sara pouted, gave a little huff, and shuffled out of the room.
Jaxon and Selara didn’t stay long. When they left, they took Sara with them. Sara tried to argue her way into staying, whining all the way to the door until Jaxon steered her out with a gentle hand on her shoulder.
Patricia walked them to the elevator. Selara glanced at her belly and smiled. “Eat well, rest up, and stay happy, okay?”
Back in the suite, Patricia sat quietly in the lounge, watching the faint reflection of Oliver on the bed through the glass. He had one arm draped over his eyes, looking completely drained. Patricia sat there for a few minutes, not moving, not going in. Finally, she picked up her bag. She was ready to leave.
On the bed, Oliver heard her. He jerked his arm away and looked toward the door, catching her just as she was about to go.
“Patricia…”
