You Looked Down on Me Once Now You Look Up (Patricia and Oliver) novel Chapter 792

“What are you doing out here?”

Patricia had left her meeting halfway through to use the bathroom. On her way back, she found Oliver waiting by the door, holding a tray. He looked tense, his whole presence sharp and cold, like he was fighting some invisible battle inside.

Oliver had to admit, he was grateful that Patricia’s voice came from behind him, not from inside the study. If those words had come from Patricia… he couldn’t even bring himself to picture it. He just couldn’t.

“Your aunt asked me to bring you some pear soup.”

Patricia glanced at the tray in his hands. “Just leave it in the dining room. I’ll come get it in a bit.”

“How much longer will you be?”

She knew he was asking about her meeting. “Almost done,” she replied. She stepped around him, opened the door, and immediately heard someone from her laptop say, “Just get a divorce. What else can you do?”

Patricia got it right away. Now she understood why Oliver was hanging around here, and why he seemed so weighed down.

Everyone in the Martin Group was talking about the PR department’s vice president and her messy marriage. Both she and her husband had been top students who worked their way up in the world. They got married, had a daughter, bought a house in Riverdale. To outsiders, they were a total success story. But, as Maggie always said, life never goes exactly how you want.

Her husband had a high income and lots of degrees, but he also had a traditional mom from a small town. After their daughter was born, the mother-in-law started pushing for a second child, insisting it had to be a boy. At first, the VP just brushed it off. She was busy with work and didn’t have the time or energy to care about all the gossip. But then her mother-in-law started showing up at her office, making a scene until the whole company knew their business.

Maggie took her by the wrist and brought her to the table. “We made your favorite tonight, spicy fish head. Make sure you eat plenty.”

Patricia smiled. “Thanks, I will.”

Since winter started, Riverdale’s weather had been all over the place. It only took one night for a cool autumn day to turn into a wild winter storm. By the time they finished eating, the wind was howling outside, bending the tree branches almost in half. Wet leaves stuck to the windows, and the whole world seemed soaked and gray.

Seeing the weather getting worse, Maggie turned on the TV and flipped through the channels, looking for some news.
