You Looked Down on Me Once Now You Look Up (Patricia and Oliver) novel Chapter 797

“It’s totally normal for couples to fight. Your uncle and I even got into a real fight when we were young.”

Maggie started sharing her own stories with Atticus. She smiled a little as she remembered the days when she was pregnant, and Atticus was always out drinking with his friends, coming home every night smelling like alcohol.

“I was in my second trimester and honestly, my mood was all over the place. I had just gotten through the worst of the morning sickness and was finally starting to feel a little more like myself. But the weather was awful, so I was stuck inside all day, bored out of my mind. Meanwhile, your uncle was out living his best life, completely carefree. Every time he came home after another night out, I just got angrier. One night, I lost it. I actually hit him over the head with a bottle. He ended up needing six stitches.”

“Right after it happened, I was so freaked out. It was the middle of the night, but I jumped in the car and drove back to my parents’ place. Your uncle was worried, obviously, because I was pregnant and just drove out into a snowstorm. He followed me, driving with one hand while holding his bleeding head with the other, chasing after me in the snow. The more I saw him chasing me, the more scared I got, so I just kept driving faster.”

Patricia laughed. She never imagined her aunt and uncle had stories like this. “What were you so afraid of?”

Maggie straightened her back, looking serious. “I was scared he’d hit me back. He’s a big guy. If he wanted to, he could have crushed me in a second.”

A chill ran through Patricia. She suddenly remembered that moment in the elevator. Her fingers curled against her knees. “Uncle Atticus isn’t like that.”

“We’d only been married for less than a year. I didn’t really know him yet. Back then, things weren’t like they are now. You met a few times, and then you got married. Who you ended up with was basically luck.”

The two of them kept chatting until they heard a noise at the door. Oliver had come back.

Maggie met him at the door, helping him with the bags he was carrying. She whispered, “Pattie said she wants to go back to Cloud Peak. Talk to her.”

Oliver’s heart skipped a beat. He went to the guest bathroom to wash his hands, then sat down next to Patricia, his voice soft and careful. “Are you hungry?”

Patricia shook her head. “No. What did you go back for?”

Oliver shot her a grateful look, then turned his attention back to Patricia, quietly waiting for her answer.

Patricia realized there was no reason to keep arguing, so she nodded.

“You two go ahead. Marian and I will pack up your things and bring them by tomorrow.”

“There’s not much,” Patricia said.

“There’s plenty,” Maggie replied, pointing at the piles of supplements. “All this needs to go back. Your in-laws had your brother bring it all this way. Whether you use it or not, taking it home is just good manners.”
