As soon as Ruby walked away, Wendy felt completely drained. She pressed her hand to the wall, struggling to steady herself, her legs shaky and weak.

Fear gripped her. Any second now, she worried, she might just collapse.

Why? Why was this happening?

Ruby’s problems weren’t new. She’d been in trouble for a while. But why was she suddenly asking for money? Why now, of all times? Why not before?

“Wendy? What’s going on? You’re here, why aren’t you coming upstairs? We’ve been waiting for you!”

A group of friends came down the stairs from the café. When they saw Wendy standing there, leaning against the wall with her head down, they looked at each other in confusion.

“I just ran into Ruby,” Wendy said quietly. “We talked for a minute.”

“Really?”

“Wait, Ruby’s here too?” The building only had two floors, with a tea lounge downstairs and a café upstairs. It sat in the middle of a park, surrounded by huge camphor trees. The place was peaceful, almost hidden away from the world.

Suddenly, it all clicked for Wendy. When Ruby had said, “With them?” she must have meant this group.

“Were you guys talking about Ruby upstairs?” Wendy asked.

There was a quick flicker of panic in their eyes. “No, of course not. Why would we talk about her?”

Wendy gave a soft, skeptical smile. She didn’t buy it for a second.

“We’re heading to get our hair done. Do you want to come?”

“You go ahead. I’ve got something I need to take care of,” Wendy replied.

Ruby asking her for twenty million could only mean one thing—she must have found out about the Jenson family’s plans to buy out Skyline Sports. There was no other explanation for such a sudden, outrageous request.

Should she give her the money?

She didn’t have that kind of cash.
