Thanks to Patricia, the energy in the ballroom shot up. It felt like everyone was suddenly wide awake, all eyes searching for her.

Meanwhile, out on the balcony, Bella pressed a hand to her chest, the other gripping the railing. Her sapphire necklace caught the light, sparkling against her skin. “How did you end up mixed up with Patricia?” she asked, her voice low.

“You know her?” Gilbert replied, cigarette dangling between his fingers. He looked frustrated, his brows knitted as he tried to figure out how to fix the situation.

Bella let out a laugh that echoed through the night. “Who in Riverdale doesn’t know her? She took down the Newton family and put her own uncle’s family in jail. She’s practically a legend.”

Hearing that, Gilbert’s headache only got worse. From the moment he’d seen Patricia in the hallway, he’d had a gut feeling she wasn’t someone who played by anyone else’s rules. She might look soft and delicate, like a southern belle, but underneath she was just as cold and ruthless as Oliver Padilla. His career was just starting to take off, and tonight was supposed to be his shot at landing a partnership with Pacific Capital. He’d never expected any of this.

He glanced at Bella. “You’re both from Riverdale. Can you talk to her?”

Bella paused, catching on to what he was really asking. “She doesn’t hang out with us. Honestly, she looks down on women like me, the ones marrying for connections. If you want me to get close to her, you’d have to ask me to break up with my fiancé first.”

Gilbert’s expression turned icy. He gave a short, humorless laugh. A pretty face, he thought, was just for show. Nice to look at, but not much use otherwise. Not even in bed.

He finished his cigarette and walked away. Bella stayed where she was, leaning on the balcony, head bowed as she fiddled with her nails. The rhinestones on her fingertips clicked together.
