If Patricia was remembering right, neither the Newtons nor the Stones ever got along with the Padilla family. She couldn't think of a single reason why Jamie would just walk up to her and start making small talk. What was he really after?
Patricia stayed put. She didn't bother getting up or even pretending to be polite. Instead, she shot him a cold look and asked, “What do you want?”
Jamie clearly didn’t expect her to be so blunt. For a second, he just stood there, thrown off. Then he gave a light laugh. “Nothing urgent. I just thought it was rare to run into you here in Golden Bay, Ms. Martin, so I figured I’d say hi.”
Patricia tilted her head a little, her finger tracing the back of her ear. Every part of her posture screamed that she was not in the mood for company.
“Are we really on such good terms that we should be exchanging hellos?” She straightened up, tapping her coffee cup’s handle with her fingertips. “Whenever a Mr. Stone shows up, I’m reminded of a time I’d rather forget. Next time you see me, Mr. Stone, just keep walking.”
It made her skin crawl. Sure, she was over Theo now, but the memory of that gut-wrenching breakup still lingered. And then Jamie had to go and mention Theo’s name. It was just… disgusting.
Jamie didn’t get mad, though. Instead, he pulled out a chair and sat down right beside her, like he belonged there. He waved over a waiter, pointed to a cup on another table, and asked for it to be brought over.
“I thought you’d moved past all that, Ms. Martin. I figured after everything that happened, you’d have let it go by now. But it doesn’t sound like it,” he said, his tone light but probing.
