“You didn’t go after him for the debt?”

Jenny rolled her eyes. “Do you think I’d dare? Honestly, I thought about it a while ago. I was working up the courage to confront him, but before I even got the chance, Jaxon got promoted. And guess what? He ended up as my dad’s boss. Talk about bad timing. I had to just suck it up.”

Everyone burst out laughing at her story, even Patricia, who couldn’t hold back a gentle giggle. What a mess.

Oliver reached over, his hand brushing her waist, then resting in her palm. He seemed relieved she wasn’t cold. “Our family doesn’t get involved with his business. Why are you so nervous?”

Jenny shrugged. “I know that, but my dad is super stubborn about it.”

“Right?!” Jenny shot Oliver a hopeful look. “Mr. Padilla, you know we’re just a small operation here. How about doing us a favor and wiping the slate clean?”

He raised an eyebrow. “Is he my kid? Why should I be the one to settle it?”

Patricia wasn’t used to Oliver being so blunt. She was mid-sip and nearly choked on her water, coughing suddenly. Jenny pulled out some napkins and handed them over. “See? Can’t you be a little nicer? You scared her.”

That day, Patricia was wearing a loose, half-collared linen dress with a long knit cardigan over it. She hadn’t taken it off, even inside. Compared to Jenny, who was in just a light chiffon blouse, Patricia was definitely bundled up.

Patricia dabbed her lips with a napkin. As she turned a little, there was a gentle curve where her belly rounded out.

Jenny’s eyes widened. “Wait… are you pregnant?”

“Damn, you actually did it. You’re going to be a dad,” Derek said with a laugh.

Jenny nudged Derek with her foot. “Watch your mouth. There’s a baby here.”
