Oliver hung on to every word the doctor said, not daring to miss a single detail. Only when Marian opened the door behind him did he finally start to relax.
They stepped into the room together, and the doctor checked the baby's heart rate again. It was steady now. Oliver let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding.
Patricia was completely drained, both in body and mind. Even when Mr. Padilla tried to make conversation, she just couldn’t find the energy to respond. She stared out the window, quiet and distant.
“My love, did that scare you?” Oliver asked gently.
Patricia nodded. She was rattled. She’d never gone through anything like that before, and on the drive to the hospital her mind had raced through every worst-case scenario, even imagining she might go into early labor. Thank goodness it had all turned out to be a false alarm.
On the way back to Cloud Peak, she couldn’t even think about dinner. She showered, changed into something comfortable, and crawled straight into bed.
Oliver did his best to coax her, but nothing worked. Finally, he picked up the phone and called Maggie.
Atticus had just walked in the door at home, handing Maggie his coat when the call came. Oliver almost never reached out to the Parsons family. If he needed anything, he’d call Atticus, not Maggie. Any call to her meant it was about Patricia.
Oliver quickly explained what happened. Maggie and Grandma immediately grabbed their things and headed for Cloud Peak.
At the house, Grandma sat on the edge of Patricia’s bed, her voice warm and soothing. “Sweetheart, surprises like this are normal during pregnancy. Don’t overthink it or wear yourself out. Didn’t the doctor say everything’s fine?”
“Grandma,” Patricia said softly, sounding almost defeated. “I just... I’m not used to all this. That’s all. It’s nothing else.”
“Even if you’re not used to it, you still have to eat,” Grandma chided gently. “If you skip dinner, the baby will keep you up again tonight.”
