Oliver let out a laugh, but it was sharp and annoyed. “Are you serious right now? People would do anything to marry a girl like Chelsea. She’s not just anyone. She’s Atticus’s only daughter. He paused and looked Hector straight in the eye. “Do you get what it means to marry his daughter?”

“It means that as long as Atticus is in charge, his son-in-law is golden too. Honestly, if he makes it, everyone close to him makes it too. And you really think they’d beg you to marry her?”

“Even if Chelsea really was pregnant, Atticus would never let her have the baby. He knows as long as he’s in power, his daughter is the one being chased, the one who should be treasured. There’s no way she’d ever have to beg some guy who refuses to get married.”

“If anyone’s embarrassed, it’s not just Chelsea. It’s Atticus too.”

Before Oliver married Patricia, he’d heard Atticus talk about parenting all the time.

He said, “For my daughter, I don’t care if she’s rich or famous. As long as she has her own job and shines in her own way, that’s enough.
