It sounded just like a balloon popping.
Patricia’s hand froze in midair. For a second, her mind just blanked out. She stared, stunned, before finally reaching to pull back the covers. The second she moved, a warm rush of liquid spilled out beneath her. It spread across the sheets, soaking them, almost like she’d wet the bed. Panic hit her all at once. Her chest tightened and her breaths came fast and shallow.
She called out for Oliver, her voice shaky and thick with tears. “Oliver...”
He heard the fear in her voice and instantly felt his heart jump into his throat. “What happened? What’s wrong, sweetheart?”
Still crying, Patricia fumbled for the intercom. “I think... my water just broke...”
“Where’s your aunt? Use the intercom, call Marian and your aunt, now!” Oliver’s voice was tight with worry. “Don’t cry, baby, please. It’s okay. Remember, the doctor said there’s time after your water breaks. Don’t panic, okay? I’m right here. You’re going to be fine, love.”
But Patricia couldn’t stop the fear. And honestly? Oliver was even more freaked out. He was stuck in Golden Bay, miles away, and totally helpless.
Maggie rushed upstairs. As soon as Patricia saw her, her tears got even louder. “Aunt Maggie,” she sobbed, “I’m so scared.”
Maggie, who’d been through all this before, kept her voice steady. “It’s all right, sweetheart. We’ll get you to the hospital. Everything is going to be fine, okay? Try not to cry, don’t let yourself get too worked up.”
The whole family had been preparing for this day, but now that it was actually here, everyone was on edge.
