You Looked Down on Me Once Now You Look Up (Patricia and Oliver) novel Chapter 937

They’d only released three seasons so far, but the girls had watched every single episode. By ten, Maggie poked her head in to tell Patricia it was time to get some rest. Patricia begged her to wait a little longer. That little bit turned into another hour and a half, and Maggie ended up just as hooked as the rest of them. By the time the credits rolled at eleven thirty, they’d all caught up.

“That’s it?” Maggie asked, looking at the dark screen.

“That’s it,” Chelsea said as she scrolled through the tablet and checked the release calendar. “Next episode drops tomorrow night at eight.”

“Don’t forget to call me,” Maggie said, still not ready to let go.

Chelsea let out a sigh. “It’d be perfect if we had some barbecue right now.”

The word ‘barbecue’ made Patricia’s eyes light up. She turned toward Chelsea, ready to say something, but before she could get a word out, Maggie swatted Chelsea on the arm. “Don’t go putting ideas in her head.”

Patricia slumped back, disappointed.

Chelsea usually wouldn’t get in trouble for craving barbecue. Sometimes Atticus would join her, and they’d make a whole father-daughter thing out of it, talking and sharing a couple of drinks. But tonight, she’d said it in front of Patricia, who was stuck on her strict postpartum diet. Chelsea winced and pulled her shoulders in. No barbecue for her until Patricia finished her recovery.

That night, all the lights at the Padilla house were blazing. The old man’s funeral was a big, traditional affair. Every little detail, from birth charts to all the rituals, needed someone from the family to oversee it.

Since landing in Golden Bay, Oliver hadn’t found a single free moment to call Patricia. Even when he did get a break, he’d check the time and decide it was too late to call. So he just kept waiting.

He was outside that evening, standing under the eaves with a cigarette, when Jaxon came over and gave him a pat on the shoulder. “You look like you’ve lost weight. Is the baby keeping you up?”

“She’s really good,” Oliver said quietly.

“So it’s the new mom that’s tough to handle?”

Oliver stayed silent. Was she? Not really. Patricia was easy to be around, if anything. He was just nervous. Maybe too nervous.
