Lydia gave his arm a gentle squeeze. “I will. Come on, let’s get some sleep. You’ve been running yourself ragged for weeks.”

The next day, Oliver stayed in Golden Bay just long enough to have a meal with his parents before heading back to Riverdale. He reached Cloud Peak close to midnight, just as Atticus was stepping into the courtyard, returning from a business dinner. They were both surprised to see each other at that hour.

“Out late tonight, Uncle?”

“Yeah, dinner and tea with some foreign investors,” Atticus replied, eyeing the travel bag Oliver carried. “Why are you getting back so late?”

“I stayed for dinner with the family in Golden Bay before leaving. Lost track of time.”

They chatted as they walked inside. The moment they stepped into the living room, Oliver could hear the heartbreaking wails of a baby upstairs. He ducked into the powder room to wash his hands, then hurried up to the nursery.

When he pushed open the door, the whole family seemed to be there. Patricia was pacing the room, cradling their daughter and whispering soft words to calm her. Three maternity nurses stood off to the side with Grandma Maggie and Chelsea, all looking helpless and exhausted. So many people, yet it was the new mom walking the floor, trying to soothe their crying baby.

Oliver’s face fell, but with the elders in the room, he kept his frustration in check. “What’s going on?”

“She’s just fighting sleep,” Patricia said, a little surprised to see him. “Why are you back so late?”

“I’ll take her. You all shouldn’t be up this late.”
