Patricia remembered what Chelsea had said. She was just about to head downstairs when she heard Oliver’s careful voice behind her. “Hector’s really not a bad guy.”
“But he’s not a good one either, is he?” As soon as Atticus heard Hector’s name, every muscle in his body seemed to tense up, like he was on high alert.
“Look, for women, marriage, pregnancy, having kids—none of it is easy. If you end up with the wrong man, it can ruin everything. You’re a dad now, and to a daughter, so you should get why I’m worried. Sure, from a business angle, Hector is talented. He’s polite, charming, the whole package. But as a son-in-law? I just don’t see it.”
“Someone who’s avoided marriage for decades isn’t going to change overnight. Any big change brings pain, whether it’s in a city or between people. If those two end up together, who’s going to face the fallout? It’ll be Chelsea. There are so many men out there, plenty who are already ready for marriage. Why pick the one guy who’s guaranteed to be trouble?”
“Nobody here is clueless.”
“Let’s not talk about this anymore.”
Oliver thought to himself, Atticus is really mad. Not just upset—actually angry.
He couldn’t help but think of Hector sitting in his office, leg propped up for days. Somehow, he felt a little bad for the guy.
The next morning, everyone gathered around the dining table for breakfast. The nanny took the little one upstairs to feed her. Patricia came down, which was rare for her. She honestly hadn’t expected Oliver to ask her to join them, so she was a bit surprised when he came to get her.
Now that you’re back, we should probably head home,” Atticus said. With his background, it really wasn’t ideal for him to stay here too long, and Oliver had only called for their help because of an emergency. Now that things were calmer, there was no reason to keep them here.
