A Vow of Deception, A Vow of Revenge novel Chapter 55

Simone suddenly fell silent. After a long pause, she asked, "Did Celia tell you?"

"Yeah. Why?"

"It's nothing... Since Nona refuses to come back, let's just leave it. Come home soon for dinner, all right?"

But Tyson suddenly felt a strong reluctance to return. "You go ahead and eat first. I've got something to handle—I'll be home later."

After hanging up, he stared hard at the spot where Elvis's car had disappeared.

Elvis, do you really think you've won? Dream on. Winona's heart belongs to me—always has. You're just a pawn she's using to get at me. One day, sooner or later, she'll come back to me...

Meanwhile, in Elvis's car, the air was thick with tension.

The driver kept his eyes on the road, silent as ever. Elvis and Winona sat together in the back seat, neither saying a word.

Winona kept her gaze fixed firmly out the window, watching the city lights slide by.

At last, it was Elvis who broke the silence.

"Did you have dinner?"

In truth, Winona hadn't eaten yet.

But she lied, "Already did."

The thought of her impending engagement to Elvis's cousin made every interaction between them feel stiff and awkward.

Elvis glanced over, his eyes dark and searching, as if he could see right through her fib. But he didn't press her. Instead, he turned to the driver. "Take Miss Thorne home."

"Yes, Mr. Rogers."

The driver clearly knew her address and immediately changed course.

Winona's phone buzzed twice in her hand. She glanced down to see a message from Veronica.

They joked back and forth a little more until Veronica said she had to run—she was meeting friends to celebrate—and ended the chat.

Winona stared at Jonah's name on her screen, then, almost without thinking, turned to Elvis. "Mr. Rogers... can I ask you something?"

"Go ahead," he replied, his voice calm.

"Are you aware of the engagement arrangement between the Thorne family and the Rogers family?"

His eyes flickered almost imperceptibly. But when he spoke, his tone remained even. "Yes. I know."

Winona fell silent at his answer, no longer feeling the need to say anything more.

She found she wasn't particularly shaken by it, either. After all, if she was meant to marry his cousin, it was only natural they'd become family. It made sense for Elvis to look out for his future sister-in-law.

While she lapsed into silence, Elvis spoke again. "How do you feel about the arrangement?"

"Huh?" The question caught her completely off guard. "How do I feel..."
