A Vow of Deception, A Vow of Revenge novel Chapter 56

After thinking for a moment, she said, "Arranged marriage is no trivial matter, so I'll treat it with the seriousness it deserves. Since I've already agreed, I intend to genuinely connect with the person I'm promised to."

She smiled at Elvis. "You have nothing to worry about."

"I… shouldn't worry?"

Winona nodded sincerely. "That's right."

She figured Elvis was likely asking on behalf of the Rogers family, making sure she was truly on board. It was only natural for an older brother to care about his younger brother's marriage.

It was a while before Elvis finally gave a soft, "Alright."

The car pulled up in front of the manor where Winona was currently staying. She thanked Elvis and was just about to get out when he suddenly asked, "There's a movie premiere on the twenty-second next month. Would you like to go together?"

Winona paused, startled, and turned to look at him.

Elvis's expression was as composed as ever, but there was a certain sincerity in his eyes.

Truth be told, Winona loved movies—especially this one. The upcoming premiere was the long-anticipated masterpiece of a renowned director, right in her favorite genre. Despite her packed schedule, she'd been following the buzz for weeks.

She just hadn't expected Elvis to invite her.

But by the twenty-second next month, she'd be back in the Capital. By then, she should have already met Jonah.

If she went to the premiere with Elvis at that point… what would that mean?

"No, thank you." Winona offered a polite smile. "I'm… not much of a moviegoer anyway. Goodnight, Mr. Rogers."

With that, she opened the door and stepped out.

Elvis watched her walk up the path and into the house. He sat there quietly for a long while, then finally let out a faint, self-mocking laugh.

"Little liar."

She'd lied to him twice tonight.

No, three times.

She claimed she'd make an effort with her fiancé, but wouldn't even go to a movie with him.

But that was alright.

"You do?"

That only confused Mr. Ford more. If she knew about the engagement, why say something like that? Even if things didn't work out in the end, it wasn't unreasonable for Mr. Rogers to help with a few things here and there.

"Yes, but even so, I shouldn't bother Mr. Rogers about every little thing."

Mr. Ford gave a helpless chuckle. "Nona, you're far too considerate. Honestly, there's no need to be so cautious. Mr. Rogers, he—"

Before he could finish, his secretary rushed in with some urgent work issue—something had gone wrong, apparently. Mr. Ford immediately snapped, "Can't you handle even the simplest tasks?"

"Mr. Ford, you'd better take care of that first."

"Alright."

He hurriedly ended the call. Winona flopped onto her bed, just as her stomach let out a loud rumble.

…She was starving.

Mr. Ford had hired a chef to take care of her meals here.
