Ellie’s POV
How dare William barge into my clinical room and raise his voice at me, especially while l am treating his patient?
Kiki snarled at his aggressive demeanor and tone. We both knew William wasn’t a threat to me. In either of my forms, I could take him down; it was the disrespect he was showing.
Before I tell him what I think about his revolting actions, l need to get the facts. I continued with the task at hand, cannulating the girl. My hand shook a little as I tied the tourniquet around her arm. I am not used to doing this to humans. If anything, it should be easier. As she is not covered in fur. A vein is a vein, Ellie. I scolded myself for hesitating in front of William. “John said the children had been found. How are they doing?” I asked as I cleaned her arm.
I heard William breathing through his nose as he picked up the vials of ketamine that I had strategically placed on the plastic tray next to a needle and syringe. “They’re on the way to my hospital. The authorities have informed their parents. I want to be there when they arrive,” He informed me. William grabbed my arm. “Now, what did you do to her?” He yelled. I pulled my arm away from him and continued with the task at hand. I have only ever done this successfully on a human once, and he had bounding veins that were impossible to miss. The girls’ veins were tiny and thready, which made it especially hard. I slid the needle into the tiny vein I could feel. I got a flash of blood in the cannula, which made me smile.
“What am I doing?” I said sweetly as I secured the cannula and removed the tourniquet. I looked at William. “I am doing your damned job. So don’t come in here and act like I am the one in the wrong.” I looked at him like the piece of shit he was. “Telling John to bring her to me. She’s a human being, William. What did you think I was going to do for her?”
“You gave her ketamine to knock her out.” He shoved the vial in front of my face, trying to change the subject. “TIL have your license for this, Ellie.” I looked at him and smiled.
“No problem. Doctor,” I challenged. “Or maybe. Just maybe. I’ll have yours.” He squinted his eyes at me as l turned the tables on him. “I may not have been there, William, nor do I know what happened. But I know that those kids were awake and breathing when you found them.” His expression told me I was right. I could feel my brow furrow. “You ignored the person who needed you the most. You sent her here with John to make it look like you were helping her. But you weren’t. You were getting rid of the person who stopped you from getting your payday.
You sent her here knowing the only medicine I have is suitable for animals.” I stroked the girl’s short brown hair.” You put those kids in the ambulance instead of the person who truly needed it. You stayed with those kids until they arrived at a place of safety. She is an afterthought.” | pointed at the girl and took a breath. I was getting worked up. “I may lose my license if her bloodwork shows she has. ketamine in her system. But open that can of worms and I will make sure there is a full-blown investigation into your actions. Doctor.” I positioned myself in front of him and poked my finger into his chest. “Because I am a vet.” I took a step back. “We’ll see who loses their license, William. Because if I am going down, I am taking you with me.”
His facial expression and posture told me I was right, and he was scared.
. “‘ll have her transferred to the hospital.”
He said as if that would make up for what he had done.
This is where I need to be humble.
“You may want to delay that request and leave her here with me,” I said. I can’t let her go with him, just in case she unintentionally shifts or he finds something strange in her bloodwork. William folds his arms. “Looking at the state of her. She has been physically abused for a while.
Those monsters may have abused her in other ways,” I suggest sadly. I know the one thing that turns William’s stomach is sexual assault cases. “We don’t know how she is going to be when she wakes up. But being surrounded by men, especially a male doctor. It may not be a good idea.” I had no clue if she had been sexually assaulted or not. But if it means keeping her here, I need to make William believe there was a possibility she had.
“So you want me to leave her here?” William scoffs. ”
You’re not exactly a people person, Ellie.”
“I don’t want her here either. But when she wakes up,she’ll need a calm environment with no men. Somewhere she can be treated. I mean, look at the state of her. Those wounds will need to be dressed daily,” I throw my hands up in the air. “For once, I was only trying to help. But you are the human doctor. You do what you feel is best for her.”
He mutters under his breath. With my wolf’s hearing, I heard him curse those monsters. He clears his throat. ” Ellie. Until she wakes up, I would appreciate your support in caring for her. She has been through enough.” He says in a soft tone. I nod my head once. “But do not give her any more of your animal stuff. I will have a supply of painkillers sent over, and I will administer her antibiotics personally.”
I scoffed. For the time being, I have gotten what I want despite having to see William multiple times a day.” Whatever,” I said, scoffing.
“I have to go. The children need checking again before their parents arrive.” He said, fixing his tie. It ticked me off that he was trying to make himself look presentable, which the girl is suffering.
Kiki tells me. But I already know this.
“I’m not the one you need to apologize to.” I gestured to the girl. “You also implicated John. Actions have consequences, William.” It’s a good job. William doesn’t hold any sway with me.I was so angry that I was on the verge of losing control.
That is something I can never let happen. If I lose control, everyone will suffer. “Calm down,” Kiki said, all panicked.
She was the one who kept me calm, my rock. But she was as pissed as I was.
“Get out and get those antibiotics for me ASAP. Or I might have a nice chat with John,” I sneered through gritted teeth. William rushed out of the room. Fearing for his life and he should. I leaned on the counter, closed my eyes, and breathed, trying to calm down. “Damned humans and their greed,” I shouted in frustration. William was willing to let her die, and for what? Money.
That’s when I heard a whimper. “She needs you,” Kiki told me. I am so angry, but I can’t take it out on her. She doesn’t deserve that after what she has been through.
“Help me,” the girl cried as she curled up into a ball. I opened my eyes and smiled at her. “What’s your name?” I asked, rolling up my sleeves in preparation.
“S..S..Sam,” she said as her body shook.
“Sam. I am going to help you, but it will take time. For now, I want you to sleep,” | told her gently, as I placed my wrist in front of her. Tears rolled down her face. Not sure if they were tears of joy, suffering, or hope. “Breathe deeply, Sam, let Ellie take care of you. Ellie will make sure you wake up,” Sam inhaled deeply. “That’s right. Let Ellie look after you,” I said as I touched her chopped hair. At least now I know what to call her.”I can get to work helping you, Sam,” I tell her. Not that she is listening, as she was so relaxed, she is asleep.
