Ellie’s POV
I initially thought Sam had lost her mind when I saw her running towards me naked, with her arms waving around and yelling. That was until she got close enough for me to hear her words. “There’s a badly injured shifter in the woods. Ellie, he’s in a bad way.”
Although my gift can help calm an animal. If he is in such a bad way, it’s the tools of my trade that may be needed to save his life. I ran back to Bessie for my emergency bag. It doesn’t have much in it, but it has the essentials. Usually, I can do a quick patch job and then get them back to my clinic, where there is everything I need. This bag has helped me save quite a few animals over the years, and it’s the very reason I always keep it at hand.
Knowing there was an injured shifter in the woods, I ran as fast as I could to the tree line. I shoved my dress into my bag and shifted. Kiki picked up the bag handle in her mouth and raced after Zola. “I just hope he is still in his animal form,” I told Kiki. For me, it will be easier to care for him.
“We’re almost there,” Kiki told me as she caught the scent of blood on the wind. Within seconds, I saw him. An adult black wolf lay in a pool of its blood. His lower leg was where the bleeding was coming from, as it was missing.
But it wasn’t missing; it was in the middle of a bear trap.
That’s how Sam knew he was a shifter, because the leg in the bear trap belonged to a human.
The bear trap at least sprang shut while he was in his wolf form. Wolves’ legs are thin, and the amputation would have been swift. if he were in his human form, the bear trap would have cut into the flesh and shattered the bone.
It would have caused the human immense pain, and it would be likely that the leg would need to be amputated, eventually.
Kiki dropped my bag and rushed up to the black wolf, giving him a reassuring nudge and licking his snout. She was probably assessing whether he was a threat to me or not. After she shifted, I threw on my dress and grabbed my bag so I could get to work. The first thing I needed to do was to slow the bleeding, so I grabbed a belt to use as a tourniquet.
Unable to move his body, the wolf snapped at me. “He thinks you’re going to attack or kill him,” Kiki told me: So l did what I do best to calm the situation. I dropped the belt, holding up my hands with my palms facing him, to show I had no weapon that could harm him. What he didn’t know was that my scent was the weapon he should have been wary of.
“Ellie won’t hurt you, handsome,” I told him as I got closer.
He sniffed the air. “Ellie wants to help you. That’s what you want as well, isn’t it? You want Ellie to help you?” I said as I touched him gently, stroking his eyes and nose.
Using my right hand, I stroked his head. With my left hand, I stroked his jaw with my wrist positioned in front ofhis snout. “You’re a magnificent-looking wolf, aren’t you?” I told him as I ran my fingers through the fur on his neck.
It was so thick and soft. If the circumstances were different, I would have liked to continue caressing him.” Ellie wants to get you back home. You just have to trust Ellie,” I told him. The next thing I knew, despite him being in pain. He was asleep:
“Why isn’t he healing?” Sam inquired.
“I don’t know. Maybe it happened so fast and the quick loss of blood prevented his wolf from healing him.”
“Or maybe he was poisoned like I was,” she suggested.
1 don’t want her thinking about that time of her life. “It doesn’t matter how. What matters is that we,” I gestured between the two of us. “Are you going to help him?” I told her as I grabbed the belt from the ground, wrapping it around his weeping limb and pulling it tight. To prevent him from losing any more blood.
Searching through my bag, I couldn’t find what I wanted.
So, I tipped it upside down. “What are you going to do?” Sam asked me. That’s when I spotted it, my lighter.
“I am going to cauterize his wound,” | told her as I picked up my blowtorch. She gasped as turned it, igniting the flame. “This will temporarily stop the bleeding until we get him back to your place and I can treat him properly.”
“Will it hurt him?” she asked sadly. I looked at the sleeping wolf.”Yes. But it will be quick,” I told her. She looked like she was about to cry. “Sam. I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t have to.
You know that. Or at least I hope you know that.”
I looked at the sleeping wolf one last time before I pointed the burning hot flame at the still-bleeding stump. He woke up and growled as he twisted around. Predictably, he snapped at me. “It’s done handsome,” I said, as his burning fur and flesh tickled my nose. “Ellie told you to trust her, and you did. Now, Ellie can help you. You just need to stay in your wolf form,” I told him, hoping he wouldn’t shift and yell at me.
Going up the stairs was hard for because of his size. I was exhausted by the time we got to Sam’s apartment. I think I need some of those exercise classes Sam has been talking about, as she seemed okay. But then again, she had the lighter end. She got us both a drink while I examined his leg.
“That’s strange,” I told Sam. “Look, the skin has already started granulating. His wolf’s healing powers are working.” I rubbed my fingers over the wound. I was confident that, other than being an amputee, he would physically recover.
“Will his leg grow back?” Sam inquired. I shook my head.” He’s a wolf shifter, not a reptile shifter. I’m not even sure if that’s a thing. But no, his leg won’t grow back.” She looked sad.
“It’s just that as an Alpha wolf, he won’t be able to lead his pack. He’ll be challenged, and either killed or cast out. His life will be over. He will be a rogue.”I don’t fully understand shifter pack dynamics. This sounded like the wolf’s way of living. But with the human element, surely there is a role for people who have experience and knowledge. But from what Sam described, there wasn’t. I looked at the magnificent beast lying on the floor. “That’s awful,” I told Sam.
She looked between the wolf and me. “I’m going to keep him safe until he can make a life for himself. I’m going to help him, just like you help me. I will be his Ellie.”
I was flabbergasted at what she was suggesting. She wanted to take responsibility for a wolf shifter. A male one who is likely to be much bigger and stronger than her.
She knows nothing about him or how he ended up in that trap. “Sounds familiar.” Kiki snickered, and she was right.
How is this different from when I took responsibility for Sam? Oh yeah, I can defend myself, she can’t. I don’t like it, but if it’s something Sam wants to do, I have to let her.
She is, after all, a grown woman. Heck, who knows? It may help her.
As I prepared to leave to return home. I couldn’t help but be afraid I was leaving her alone with a stranger; anything could happen. “Are you sure?” I asked. She nodded her head frantically. “Call me every day. If you have any problems, tell Edgar, and I will be here. If he harms or threatens you, I will end him. You know I can do it.” I told her as I hugged her one last time.
I still felt anxious as I drove away. But Sam has to live her own life and make her own choices. It felt like she didn’t need me quite as much. But that’s crazy. She is always going to need her sister. Because her sister is always going to need her.
