Alpha’s Betrayal Luna’s Revenge (Samantha) novel Chapter 29

Nolan’s POV

The ambulance arrived quickly, but it was already too late.

A police car pulled up just after the ambulance, asking us to step aside so the medics could do their jobs.

I had Frank’s blood on my hands, but Sam was covered.

Her white karate uniform was ruined. She held on to me and cried about Frank. We were taken to the police station for questioning. They also wanted our clothes for any forensic evidence. We were escorted from the changing rooms to a young officer’s desk to make a statement. As we took a seat, he pulled out a pad and pen. “I’ll make this quick.” He told us, “It’s unlikely that anything will come of the shooting. He was just a homeless bum, after all.”

I was utterly speechless at the officer’s attitude. I had the urge to rip his head off. But my lack of words allowed Sam to tell him exactly what was on her mind. She got to her feet and leaned over the desk. “How dare you?” She sneered at the officer. “Frank may not have had a roof over his head. He may not have had any money. But he was a human being, and a coward with a gun shot him.” She rubbed her temples. “And you’re telling me you won’t be doing much to find his killer? Well, shame on you and your entire department. Every murder should be investigated. Because every life matters. No matter where they live.” She yelled. The young officer shrank in his chair.

Sam’s outburst attracted a lot of attention. “Can I help you, Miss?” a senior-looking person whose name tag read Gobert offered.

“Judging by the opinion of your officers, probably not.

Where I’m from, murder is murder,” Sam practically spat at the young officer.

“What?” Gobert asked in a shocked tone.

“A man was murdered, and you won’t be looking for his killer.” She snapped at Gobert. Then she pointed to a banner on the wall. “It should read, protect, and serve.

Only if you have a home.” She grabbed my crutches and threw them at me. I guess it was time to leave.

“Look,” Gobert told us. Snatching the pen and paper off the officer’s desk. “Let me take your statement, and I will guarantee your friend’s case will be investigated.” Sam turned her back on Gobert. “Look, if you don’t give me your statement, how am I to help your friend? The killer will get away.”

Sam thought for a second and then agreed to give a statement. We went into Gobert’s office, and Sam told him everything she saw. Gobert then organized a ride home and thanked us for our time. He also told us he would be sending his officers for some sensitivity training.

On the ride home, I couldn’t help but worry about Sam.

Since the police station, she has been quiet. She is such a young girl and should not be exposed to that sort of thing.

But then again, why was I not affected by what happened? As I followed Sam up the stairs to the apartment, Edgar came rushing toward us. “It’s okay, Ellie. She’s here. She looks like hell, but she’s home,” he said down the phone, which he had attached to his ear. Ellie must be Sam’s sister. I never knew Edgar knew Ellie.

As we walked through the door, Sam didn’t stop. She walked straight to the bathroom. That’s when I heard Sam’s phone ringing. The caller ID told me it was Ellie.

Hello,” I said, answering it.

“Who is this? Where is Sam?” Ellie’s voice barked down the phone. She sounded young but angry. There were animals in the background crying out in pain. She sounded older than Sam and had quite an authoritative tone in her voice. My mind pictured her as Sam, but older.

“It’s Nolan. Sam is in the shower,” I told her. Before I told her what had happened to Frank.

“He knew you cared for him, Sam,” I told her, thinking of my last conversation with Frank. Eventually, she fell asleep on my shoulder. When I was sure she was fast asleep, 1 moved. Considering the situation, I used her bed for the night. Seeing that she was flat out on mine.

I was fast asleep, dreaming about the black wolf, when I heard a woman screaming. Making my way to the edge of the bed, I went to stand up, but I fell. Forgetting I needed support.

I crawled to the doorway and used the frame to pull myself upright. I hopped through the door as fast as I could. Fearing that someone had broken into our apartment and was attacking Sam. Turning on the light to deter the assailant. I discovered that there was only Sam in the room. She was lying on the couch, thrashing around, screaming and shouting for help. Praying for the pain to stop. I grabbed my crutches and was making my way toward her when she cried out for Garth.

“Sam. Sam. It’s Nolan. You need to wake up.” I grabbed Sam’s shoulder and shook her. This caused her to scream again and fight against me so much that I was left holding her shirt. She was topless and scooted over to the corner of the room and curled up in the fetal position away from me. She wrapped her arms around herself and cried, this time begging for death to take her.

“What the hell?” I said, listening and looking at the terrified young girl who had done nothing but care for me.

That’s when I saw her scars; her upper back was covered in them. Anger filled my heart as I put two and two together.

The screaming, the pleading, the begging, and the scars.

Someone had done this to her. Someone did this intentionally to the woman who saved me.

That’s when I made Sam a silent promise. I may not know who I am. But one thing is for sure. Whoever did this to you, l am going to kill them.
