Alpha’s Betrayal Luna’s Revenge (Samantha) novel Chapter 55

Reagan’s POV

“Ellie wouldn’t burst through her door. I don’t know who that is, but it isn’t Ellie,” Sam said, rushing to find out who it was. But she didn’t get very far when a man wearing a police uniform opened the door separating us. His name tag read John Simpson’. “Oh, thank God you’re here, Sam, Ellie needs these items, and I wouldn’t know where to look for them. I don’t even know what some of them are,” he said, handing Sam a phone. Sam took it and began moving around the room, opening drawers and cupboards.

Putting everything in a bag.

“Where’s Ellie?” I asked John. He must have been with her, and he had left her somewhere.

“We had reports that hunters were setting traps in the area.” I nodded in understanding. “It’s one thing to hunt an animal. But it’s another thing to capture an animal and kill it when it has no means of escape or no way to defend itself.”

“That’s not hunting,” I told John. The thrill of the chase is the best part of hunting. That had always been Callan’s favorite part, anyway.

“That’s what we all think as well. But we can’t do anything about it, as what they are doing is not illegal. So, a few of us go out there each evening just after dusk and destroy the traps. I wear the uniform to prevent any squabbles with any hunters we may cross paths with. Ellie has been coming in case an animal has been caught and needs treatment.” That makes sense. “Tonight, when some of the others left, one of them took Ellie’s bag as she wanted to make her own home.” He shook his head. “I didn’t hear it, but Ellie did. She ran into the woods as if the hounds of hell were chasing her. When I reached her, she was comforting a bear cub that was caught in a trap. It was shocking that she even got close to the thing. Never mind being brave enough to comfort it. But you know Ellie.” He shook his head again. “Ellie wouldn’t leave the cub and sent me back here for what she needed.”

“Ellie wants a tranquilizer gun?” Sam asked John.

“Yassumed it was in case the mama or papa bear showed up,” John told her. That would make sense. Ellie may be a shifter, but it would be unlikely that even she could take down an adult-sized bear, as they are very protective of their young. Sam’s confused expression puzzled me, as it would make sense to have some protection while Ellie deals with the cub.

John drove, and I held onto the bag of medical supplies Ellie wanted. Sam took responsibility for the small case that held the tranquilizer gun and darts. She kept tapping the box, trying to tell me something with her expressions.

Something she didn’t want John to know. But I didn’t understand, and eventually she gave up.

When we got to the edge of the woods, John jumped out of his car, telling us to follow him. We ran for miles. It was the first time I had used the prosthetic properly, and it worked like a charm. I ran as fast as I did on two legs. It gave me hope that perhaps one day, if Dr. Monroe managed to acquire one, Callan could run with a pack again.

Ten minutes later, I could hear a bear cub whining in the distance. It pushed me to sprint. I didn’t care about the species, it hurts my heart to hear a young ane in pain. I rushed toward the cub’s cries. I made it just in time to see Ellie being challenged by a male grizzly bear. He was roaring at her as if he were about to attack. But Ellie didn’t move.

“Ellie, get into the fetal position,” John shouted as he rushed in front of me, reaching for his gun.

7 thought he was going to kill you,” I said finally, finding my voice.

“So you were trying to protect me?” Ellie smiled, and I couldn’t believe the resemblance between her in real life and her in my dreams. It was uncanny.

I’ve never needed anyone to save me. You should remember that,” Ellie informed me. She walked away. But she turned back and looked at me, “Thank you for trying, though. Although I think it was me that ended up saving you in the end,” she snickered. Unfazed, she picked up the medical bag from the ground. “I have a cub to see to,” she said before walking away.

“What the hell was that?” I asked Sam.

“That’s Ellie,” Sam said as she skipped after her. I know that’s Ellie, but who the hell is she?
