Alpha’s Betrayal Luna’s Revenge (Samantha) novel Chapter 66

Reagan’s POV

Caspian paced around his office, shouting and cursing, blaming himself for not sending someone to pick Ellie up.

“Ellie wouldn’t have gotten in the car with a stranger,” I told him. If anyone is to blame for this, it’s not Caspian.

Callan was full of concern for Ellie. He was panicking and insisted we find Ellie’s last known location. That we get out there and search for her. He had the motivation, but given his disadvantage, he would only slow the trackers down. “I know that wherever she is, she’s alive. She just has to be,” Callan told me adamantly. I closed my eyes and prayed to the goddess, begging that Callan was right and that Ellie was safe.

Richard once said Ellie was special, and he was right. She may not have been my mate. But I felt connected to her, and the thought of her being killed was painful. It made me realize how quickly I had grown to have feelings for her.

“We have to tell Sam,” Caspian told me. I closed my eyes, not sure if I could. Not because she didn’t deserve to know. But because I am struggling to believe I will never see her again. Telling Sam would break her heart.

Caspian put his hand on my shoulder and assured me she would be found. He can’t know that, not for sure. “If you don’t want to come with me. I will go alone. But Sam ought to know of the situation,” he told me. I took several deep breaths, as I knew he was right. But I was scared.

Saying it out loud will make the situation real.

Fear aside: Side by side, Caspian and I headed to the palace gardens. Sam’s last known location. The closer we got, the heavier my feet felt. When I saw the door to the gardens, a sense of dread washed over me. My jaw clenched as I looked around for Sam. I secretly hoped we wouldn’t find her, so Ellie would have more time to arrive,-and we were worried for nothing. “Caspian,” Sam yelled excitedly, rushing toward us, throwing herself into his arms. Anybody would think she hadn’t seen him for days, not hours. But then, I remembered hearing that the mate bond made you feel that way.

“Is she here? She was panicking, worried she was going to be late. But her timing is perfect. Is she at the gate?” Sam asked, all excited. She took Caspian’s hand, wanting to drag him to the exit.

“Sam, wait,” he said, not moving. She looked confused, and he guided her to a bench, taking a seat. Sam copied him.

“Caspian, you’re scaring me. What’s wrong?” She said in a concerned tone. “Don’t tell me the Alpha King changed his mind. He is such an asshole for doing this to us. I knew something was going to go wrong. Didn’t I tell you earlier, Reagan? I could sense it?”

Caspian pulled Sam to his chest. “Sam,” I said, but I couldn’t do it; my mouth moved, but no words came out.

Then Callan repeated that he wanted to go searching for Ellie, tracing her steps from when she left her truck. Why didn’t I remember that? I asked myself, assuring myself that she was safe. I shifted so I could talk to Zola. “She’s not dead. I just know it,” I told her happily.

“How can you be so sure?” Caspian asked skeptically.

“There were no unexplained reports given to you today.

No visits from the Wolf Council about anything weird happening. No mention of any large number of animal fatalities.” Caspian shook his head. I rubbed Zola’s ears and looked at Caspian. “This is Ellie we’re talking about.

She’s a stronger human than a wolf,” I told him. Zola looked up at me. “You and I both know. What would happen if anyone attacked Ellie? What she would do if she got angry,” Zola chuffed. “Whatever is keeping Ellie from being here? I truly believe she is safe,” I said, laughing, hoping I was right. But there was no need for hope. I know I’m right.
