Ellie’s POV
I stood at the back of a crowd of people as a screaming older woman covered in blood was carried through the camp. I silently watched the rogue pack’s visible distress.
But it was when Aaron carried a young pregnant woman in his arms that the camp became distraught.
I couldn’t see the extent of their injuries, but the mutterings among the people insinuated that neither of them would make it. “Why would you say something so horrible?” I yelled at a woman standing in front of me. My position prevented me from making that assessment, so l don’t know how she could.
More than a dozen people turned and looked at me. A young girl was the only one brave enough to speak. “There was so much blood. They must be hurt badly.”
“That’s a ridiculous accusation to make,” I told the child.
“She means nothing by it. It’s just that usually, when someone is so badly injured and there is that much blood, they don’t survive. We’re rogues, we have no supplies and get no help from anyone,” a woman told me while stroking the child’s hair. I looked at the surrounding people. Surely there is someone with some medical knowledge. But then again, even if they did. With no supplies, that knowledge would be useless.
“If I am going to miss Sam’s mating ceremony. I will not beletting them die, not without trying my best,” I told Kiki as I gripped the straps on my backpack.
“Move!”T shouted, pushing through the crowd toward the tent where Fran and.Ingrid had been taken. As l approached the tent, the big guy blocked my path. ” Move!” I demanded.
He looked me up and down. Not showing any signs of moving. “I’m a vet,” I told him. To which he scoffed. ” They’re in their human form,” he told me, pointing out the obvious.
“Don’t I know it?” I responded. A woman’s piercing scream distracted him, causing him to turn around, allowing me to slip past him.
As I walked through a blanket, which was acting as a door.
The smell of blood hit my nose. Putting on my professional head, I dropped my backpack on the ground.
Rushing to the screaming older woman. Both of her tibias were exposed. She had a scalp laceration as well as multiple smaller cuts. “I need something to wrap around her legs,” I yelled as I grabbed a piece of cloth off the ground and pressed it to the head wound. “Here,” I told the big guy who followed me inside. “Apply pressure. It will stop the bleeding. Eventually,”
I looked over my shoulder at Aaron, who was comforting his mate Ingrid. She was in the fetal position, guarding her stomach. Which tells me where her pain was. “Fran, do you have a wolf?” I asked. Surely her wolf should have stopped her bleeding. “Her wolf has been dormant for years,” The big guy told me. Which is bad news. My pheromones only affect animals if she doesn’t have one. It won’t work. But I have a small vial of morphine in my backpack.
I rushed to my bag, tipping everything onto the floor, easily spotting my emergency medical kit. “That’s why your bag was heavy,” Kiki pointed out.
“You know I never leave home without one, and l am glad about that right now.” I pulled out the small vials, which I keep in there – lidocaine, and a low dose of morphine and phenobarbital. “Fran, I am going to give you something to help with the pain. While we figure out a plan,” The plan was that she needed a hospital. But looking at how much blood she was covered in, l am dubious as to whether she would make it.
“Likely. It happens all the time to animals.”
“Aaron,” Fran called him weakly. He rushed over to her and took her hand. That’s when I noticed Markus on the ground. I guess he took too many deep breaths. “I want to meet my great-grandbaby,” Fran told Aaron. I forgot that they were related. Fran is Aaron’s grandma.
Aaron looked at me. “Can you do it?” Aaron asked desperately.
“I have never performed a cesarean on a human, just animals. If she were in her wolf form, no problem.” I told him honestly. This place is far from sterile, and I have very little equipment. But they will both die if I don’t do something. “I guess the principle will be similar to getting the baby out. But I know I will struggle to close the wound. It’s too different.”
“Aida. Will do that,” Ingrid said softly. I didn’t even realize she was awake and listening.
“If something goes wrong, though..” I started to say.
“Nothing is going to go wrong. I have faith that the goddess sent you my way. So you could do this.” Aaron dropped to his knees and begged. “Please, just try. They are all I have.”
