Reagan’s POV
Desperate times call for desperate measures, and right now l am desperate.
Caspian is a mess. He didn’t leave his suite for days, constantly reminding himself of what he had lost and wallowing in self-pity and acting as if his life were over. Caspian knew he shouldn’t have lied to Sam for so long. He had plenty of chances to come clean and tell her the truth, but he didn’t. Even leading up to the mating ceremony. He was still lying to her. Perhaps I should have said something, but was it my place?
Now, Caspian can’t forgive himself. Hawk won’t forgive him either and refuses to speak to Caspian. Hawk has sunk so deep into himself that he’s practically dormant, which is now an enormous problem.
With Hawk being absent. The head of the Wolf Council, Lincoln, has raised concerns about whether Caspian is fit to be the reigning Alpha King. A vote about his concerns will be held next week. As annoyed as l am about the matter, I know Lincoln has the best interests of the kingdom at heart. This means I have less than a week to help Caspian come to his senses. Or our family’s claim to the throne will end. Which is upsetting, Callan, as he is as strong as ever, but to be overlooked as I declared dead.
Despite her note, I had to talk to Sam. When Sasha heard I was going to South View to see her. She insisted on coming with me. She wanted to see Sam, but she also wanted Ellie to check on her baby. I couldn’t deny her request as she had done nothing but worry about her baby since Phillip had told her about what had happened.
To make matters worse, with Dr. Monroe gone, there is no one in the kingdom to provide pre or postnatal care for any pregnant women. “I need to check my baby is okay,” Sasha told Phillip. Phillip wanted to gowith her. But with Caspian being in a vulnerable state, Phillip would have to remain with Caspian. I trust Phillip to inform me of any issues, not that there would be any in the couple of days I will be gone.
The drive to South View was long, even in my specially adapted car.
Callan grew more excited the nearer I got, while my anxiety increased.
Callan is still hoping for Ellie to forgive me, as he liked Kiki a lot. But I think my chances are slim. Ellie is strong, independent, and stubborn.
That will have come from years of not being part of a pack and being alone. She’s entirely self-reliant. Why would she want me?
I parked outside Ellie’s clinic. Sasha desperately wanted to rush inside.
But I told her I should go first as I needed to apologize to both Sam and Ellie. Sasha wasn’t happy, but she understood.
Full of confidence, I climbed out of the car and walked toward the door. I grabbed the doorknob. But I froze. This trip was about Sam and Caspian. I also wanted it to be about Ellie and me. Despite how things ended, I know we could have made things work between us. I am confident; that is why I am immune to her power. We may not have a mate bond, but we have a deep-rooted connection. It may break me if she rejects me.
I took a deep breath and walked inside. The bell above her door rang, signaling to Ellie that someone had arrived. She would be here soon, and I would know my fate.
When she appeared, she stood there in her white coat, looking as beautiful as ever with her hair in a bun and a pen sticking out of it.
Callan howled with delight. I yearned to touch her, to pull her hair loose and run my fingers through it. But I knew I couldn’t.
Send her in, but you, Former Alpha King. You can get the hell out. I have no business with you.” That was me well and truly told. She sent me packing with my tail between my legs. But I did as instructed, sending Sasha inside to see Ellie, while I came up with another plan.
As I sat in the car alone, “Why won’t she listen?” | yelled, hitting the steering wheel.
“Why won’t she listen? Are you serious, Reagan? Sam was hurt repeatedly by people she trusted. Even if Ellie had feelings for you.
Why should she trust you, knowing you helped deceive Sam? I did nothing wrong, and now I’ve lost Kiki, You’re lucky I’m even speaking to you.”
“Callan, you’re a genius?” I yelled as I drove off.”What are you doing? You’ve left Sasha with Ellie.”
“Ellie won’t let anything happen to Sasha. Besides, I’ll pick her up after I have talked to Ellie.” I told Callan as I drove to the place where I first met Ellie. I then reached into the glove compartment, where my phone was.
When I was in place. I found the sheriff’s number online, called, and pretended to be scared. “HELP. I was out hiking and was attacked by a wolf. I managed to hurt it, but I’m scared the pack will come. Please help me.” I cried into the phone. Then I told them where I was. That would bring the cops here. Knowing there was an injured wolf out there, they would call Ellie. I snickered, knowing she would have to deal with me. Or Callan, she still likes him.
