**A Promise Written on the Rusted Edge of Time by Dael Rowan Sire**
**Chapter 66**
“It’s not early dating anymore,” he declared, a hint of mischief dancing in his eyes.
I blinked in confusion, the words hanging in the air like a riddle I couldn’t quite solve. “What are you talking about?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
With a playful grin, he reached out, his fingertip gently brushing against the spot behind my ear where my hearing aid was discreetly tucked away. Despite my hair falling over it, he seemed to know exactly where it was, as if he had memorized every detail about me.
“I know you wear a hearing aid,” he said, his tone teasing yet somehow reassuring.
A flicker of uncertainty crossed my mind, and I couldn’t help but wonder if he was about to withdraw from this moment. “You’re not trying to back out, are you?” I asked, my heart racing at the thought.
He gritted his teeth, a playful glint in his eyes that suggested he might just bite if I dared to admit my fears. “No,” I mumbled, attempting to sound more confident than I felt.
He straightened up, clearing his throat as if to shake off any lingering doubts. “Good,” he replied, his voice steady.
“Let’s go on our date,” I urged, trying to sound more assertive than I felt.
The young man’s smile was radiant, brimming with confidence and a hint of excitement that was infectious.
After the SAT results were released, our homeroom teacher had sent out a message in the group chat, inviting everyone to gather for a final celebration. “His treat,” the message read, and it felt like a small victory for all of us.
When the results came out, they exceeded everyone’s expectations, igniting a flurry of cheers and congratulations in the chat. It was a moment of triumph, and the time was set for 7 PM.
As I made my way downstairs, I found Chase waiting for me at the entrance, his presence both comforting and exhilarating. When he saw me, his thin lips curled into a smile, and he stepped forward, reaching for my hand with a gentle yet confident grip.
However, as we approached the restaurant entrance, I suddenly shook off his hand, feeling a strange mix of thrill and trepidation. I couldn’t ignore the way his expression darkened, but I chose to focus on the moment ahead.

“Are the class president and Chase close?” someone asked, curiosity lacing their tone.
“Why did you arrive together?” another chimed in, their eyes glinting with intrigue.
I shrugged, trying to play it cool. “Not really,” I replied, my heart pounding as I felt Chase’s gaze on me.
Chase looked up, his eyes wide with mock hurt. “Yeah, not close at all. We just made out for half an hour,” he quipped, his words hanging in the air like a challenge.
The truth was, it hadn’t just been a simple kiss; there had been tongues involved, and his pale pink lips were still tinged with a delicious shade of red. Thankfully, just then, the waiter arrived, opening the door and bringing in a wave of delicious aromas that distracted everyone from Chase’s bold statement.
After we finished our meal, the group, buzzing with energy, insisted that since we were all adults now and the night was still young, we should head to a bar for a rare chance to celebrate together. Our teacher, ever the cautious figure, decided to join us, his concern evident.
Once we settled in, someone suggested a game of Truth or Dare, and the atmosphere shifted to one of playful anticipation. After several rounds filled with laughter and light-hearted challenges, the bottle finally stopped spinning in front of Chase.
He chose Truth, and one of the guys next to him read the question aloud, their voice ringing with excitement. “Do you have someone you like? Is she here?”
Chase’s gaze flickered to me, and I felt a jolt of anxiety shoot through my chest. Instinctively, I pretended to look curiously at him, but inside, my heart raced like a drum, pounding against my ribs. Our teacher’s presence loomed large in my mind; if he discovered the truth about us, the embarrassment would be unbearable.
