Unable to suppress her curiosity any longer, Janet asked, "Madison, you used to be head over heels for Johnny, so why did you say you won't marry him? Don't tell me you've found someone else!"
She spoke in a low voice just loud enough for Madison to hear.
Madison had just finished replying to Sam's message when she heard Janet's question. She instinctively looked up and met Janet's probing gaze.
She only needed a moment to realize why Janet had asked such a question.
Setting her phone aside, Madison answered solemnly, "I was blind before. Now that I see the truth, I can finally tell who's human and who's a monster."
At that moment, her phone, which had gone dark, lit up again with a message from Sam.
"I miss you too."
That short sentence made Madison's heart swell with warmth. Her features became softer and more captivating.
Taking it all in, Janet was now sure her earlier theory was right, and it took her by surprise.
She had seen how obsessed Madison had been with Johnny over the years. To put it bluntly, Madison had even been willing to cut ties with her childhood best friend for him.
Now that it seemed like Madison's affections had shifted elsewhere, how could Janet not be surprised? At the same time, she felt frustration, anger, and curiosity.
In short, she felt a complicated mix of emotions. Since she was feeling conflicted, she sounded more sarcastic than she actually was.
"Oh? Who could possibly be capable enough to help you realize that, when you've been blind to the truth for so long?"
Hearing this, Madison looked up to meet Janet's mocking gaze. On a closer look, Madison noticed the concern lingering in Janet's gaze.
Knowing Janet's tendency to speak contrary to her heart, Madison handed her phone to her with a smile. "You know him, too. It's Sam."
