With that many people watching, Johnny and Kaitlyn couldn't deny it even if they'd wanted to. In the end, humiliated, they had to sign IOUs in front of everyone before they could leave.

After they'd had their fill of the drama, the others took the hint and filed out. Even Janet made an excuse and slipped out.

Soon, the private room was empty except for Madison and Sam.

Madison carefully tucked the two IOUs into her handbag, then looked over at Sam beside her.

When she caught him watching her, her heart skipped, and she forced out, "Sam, why are you looking at me like that?"

Catching the flicker in her eyes, Sam saw the guilt right away.

Was she afraid he would ask about the night before?

With that, Sam lowered his gaze and said quietly, "Nothing. I just remembered. Shouldn't Johnny be at the station right now? How did he get out?"

It hadn't occurred to him until now. He'd told the police to keep Johnny locked up for a few days, no matter what they found. Without Sam's say-so, there was no way Johnny could have gotten out this fast.

Madison froze for a beat, then realized something was off.

Right. Johnny had tried to drug her before. Even without proof that it was him, knowing Sam, he would never have let Johnny off easy. But it had been less than two days, and Johnny was already out.

As that crossed her mind, she met Sam's searching look. Her eyes went wide, and she blurted, "Sam, you don't think I got Johnny released, do you?"

Sam stayed silent.

Madison glared, fuming, "How could I? Johnny tried to drug me. Why would I let him off? And if I'd gone soft on him, I wouldn't have staged today's whole scene."

Sam made a quiet sound of acknowledgement, and his expression eased.
