What do I want him to do?
I thought, if this had been a couple of days ago, I might have had an answer for him.
If he’d been willing to help save Chloe, I might have considered moving back.
But at that critical moment, what he’d proposed was divorce.
So, there were no “ifs.” There never had been.
I caught a faint whiff of alcohol on him and took a step back. I looked him squarely in the eyes and said, seriously, “I want you to do nothing. Keeping things as they are now is perfectly fine.”
He frowned. “Just like this?”
“What’s the difference between this and being divorced?” he pressed.
As he spoke, he stared intently at my calm face, but all he could find was distance, none of the old compliance.
I looked up at him, licking my slightly dry lips. “We should be divorced anyway.”
What I actually wanted to say was, we are divorced. But with the divorce papers almost in my hand, I didn’t want to risk any last–minute complications.
A sudden panic seemed to seize Zane. He reached out and grabbed my wrist.
“I told you, I won’t divorce you. We can never get divorced.”
But… the divorce was already finalized.
I tried to pull my hand back, but he wouldn’t budge. I took a deep breath, trying to suppress my rising anger. “This isn’t something you get to
decide alone!”
Seeing my apparent determination, his grip tightened.
He stared straight at me. “Is this really about that senior of yours?”
I was stunned, almost wanting to laugh. “What did you say?”
“I’m asking you what’s really going on with you and Elias.”
“There is nothing going on between us!” My temper finally snapped. I spoke slowly, emphasizing each word, “Zane, that’s rich, coming from you. Stop projecting your own guilt onto me.”
He rarely saw me this worked up, which only seemed to convince him I was hiding something,
solidifying his suspicion about me and Elias. “Fine. If that’s the case, then come home with me now.”
He started jabbing the elevator button repeatedly, pulling me toward it without another word.
I panicked. “Let me go!”
He was unmoved.

Chapter 168
“Let. Her. Go”
The voice came from behind us. The moment he spoke, Zane released my hand
Gavin was standing in the doorway I hadn’t even seen him arrive. His expression was icy, his gaze fixed on the spot where Zane had been holding me
He motioned for me to come over “Come here.”
A strange sense of relief washed over me. thurried to his side without hesitation.
I probably looked ridiculously meek.
Seeing me play the obedient card so well seemed to dissipate some of the Irritation simmering in him. He glanced at Zane and let out a short, humorless laugh.
“Trying to bully her right outside my door?”
Zane, who still held a degree of caution around him, forced a smile. “Where did you get that idea? I was just taking her home.”
Gavin’s cold stare didn’t waver. “She coming back with you?”
Professionally, the Grayson and Windsor families have always been business partners.
Personally, the two of them grew up together. And now, with Gavin and me reconciled, he was essentially Zane’s brother–in–law.
Zane clearly didn’t want to sour their relationship again. His tone softened.
“Couples have arguments. What happens in the bedroom stays in the bedroom. It’s really not as serious as you’re making it out to be.”
When I heard that phrase–what happens in the bedroom stays in the bedroom–I instinctively glanced at Gavin. I didn’t miss that sharp, icy flicker in his eyes.
