Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 104

Bennett pressed his lips together, silent as the hotel lobby fell into a heavy hush, suffused with the dark tension radiating from Cassian.

"Get in touch with the Blackwood family. I want to see exactly what game they're playing."

Cassian's voice came out through gritted teeth, each word cold enough to chill the air.

Not a single person present failed to shudder.

At that same moment, in the Blackwood Group's headquarters—

Morgan narrowed his eyes, drawing Mira closer in his arms.

His gaze, usually soft and languid, now sharpened with scrutiny as he fixed it on the little girl's face—so like someone he resented.

He reached out, pinching Mira's chubby cheek between two fingers.

So soft, like a marshmallow, yet for some reason it bothered him deeply.

"Cassian's child… she looks just like him."

Morgan's words drifted out, light as mist, yet there was something unsettling in the air whenever he spoke.

Mira, usually sweet and unafraid of strangers, squirmed with unfamiliar agitation in his hold.

A loud smack shattered the stillness.

Morgan's secretary froze mid-breath, stunned to see the little girl—fearless as a kitten—dare to strike.

Morgan frowned down at Mira. Her tiny hand had landed on his arm.

It was light, didn't even leave a mark.

Yet he smiled, intrigued, studying the bright, black eyes staring back at him.

Leaning in close, he let a smirk curl his lips in front of those sparkling eyes. "Got your mother's fire, haven't you?"

Mira couldn't make sense of Morgan's words, but instinctively recoiled, wrinkling her nose and pursing her lips in clear dislike.

She looked more adorable than threatening.

Morgan, oddly, wasn't offended. The resemblance between Mira and Ruby softened him, sparking a rare patience.

"What if tonight, it hadn't been me? What if a real kidnapper had grabbed her? What would Ruby have done?" Morgan propped his head on his hand, sounding almost thoughtful.

The secretary replied at once, "Miss Mira could have been in real danger."

Morgan's brow furrowed, his confusion plain. "Exactly. Ruby and her daughter, all alone out there—how much safer would they be with me?"

The secretary reported dutifully, "We've reached out to Miss Grayson. She should be in touch soon."

Morgan distractedly restrained Mira's restless hands, toying with her fingers. "Just tell her I've found Mira. If she wants her back, she knows where to find me."

"But… won't Miss Ruby find that suspicious?" The secretary scratched his head, hesitating.

A child snatched in the dead of night, and by pure coincidence, she's found by Mr. Blackwood himself? It practically screamed setup.
