Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 105

Morgan's eyes darkened, his voice soft and coaxing, almost hypnotic. "What could possibly be unsafe? Rue, if it weren't for me, Mira would have been taken. You're out there alone with a child—of course someone's going to target you. Come to me. I'll have people protecting you both around the clock. Mira will have the advantages of a good home, the best education money can buy, and she'll grow up safe and happy. Isn't that what you want?"

Though his tone was gentle as a summer breeze, to Ruby, the voice on the other end of the line sounded like the devil whispering in her ear.

This lunatic! It was a plain, undisguised threat!

Ruby was shaking with anger, wishing she could reach through the phone and slap Morgan across the face.

He'd sunk so low as to use Mira's safety as leverage against her!

"Veyne Global Headquarters, Rue. I'll be waiting."

A low chuckle echoed in her ear before the line went dead, leaving Ruby frozen in place, the world spinning around her.

Morgan, meanwhile, leaned back in his chair, thoroughly satisfied. He even found himself in the mood to tease Mira, but the baby only responded with indifference.

Moments later, the secretary who had just left returned, looking uneasy. He held up his phone, lowering his voice instinctively. "Mr. Blackwood, it's Mr. Veyne on the line."

"Cassian?" Morgan's brows shot up in surprise. He glanced at the limited-edition watch on his wrist, puzzled. He'd arranged for everything to be handled discreetly at night—how had Cassian gotten wind of it so quickly?

His expression turned grave. "Tell him I've gone to bed."

A threatening voice came through the phone, icy and direct. "Morgan, if you don't pick up in the next minute, Veyne & Co. will block one of The Blackwood Group's deals."

The secretary, hands trembling, muted the message as cold sweat broke out along his spine.

Morgan's face darkened immediately.

"Mr. Blackwood…" the secretary ventured, glancing nervously at his boss.

"He's almost here, isn't he?" Morgan's eyes narrowed, a sharp chill in his gaze.

The secretary hesitated, confused, and then—a knock came at the office door.

"Mr. Blackwood, there's someone from Veyne & Co. here to see you."

Both Morgan and his secretary stiffened.

How could Cassian's people be at the door already, barely a minute after sending the message?

Morgan's scowl deepened as he stared at the door.

The secretary made to open it, but Morgan stopped him with a raised hand.

He stood up himself, gripping the handle—and immediately sensed a chill on the other side.

Cassian was standing there, flanked by a flustered receptionist who had clearly failed to stop him. Cassian's eyes were cold as steel, fixed on Morgan with an intensity that felt like a physical blow.
