Ruby glanced down at Mira.
Mira blinked her big eyes and gave Ruby a wide, innocent grin, instantly warming Ruby's heart.
"Alright," Ruby replied, her eyes softening as she smiled.
Just then, Mrs. Carter—the landlady—seemed to remember something. She bustled off, only to reappear moments later, wheeling out a stroller.
"This was sent over by my daughter ages ago, but for one reason or another we never used it. It's just been gathering dust in the storage room. Rather than let it go to waste, why don't you let Mira have some fun with it?" Mrs. Carter waved enthusiastically at them both.
Ruby hesitated, shaking her head apologetically. "It's already so generous of you to let us stay in such a lovely place. I really couldn't—"
Mrs. Carter cut her off at once. "Nonsense! My daughter hardly ever visits with her son now, and he's way too big for it anyway. What's the point in letting it rot in the storeroom? At my age, the one thing I can't stand is waste."
Her insistence was impossible to refuse. Ruby, moved by Mrs. Carter's warmth, could only accept with quiet gratitude.
The moment she agreed, Mrs. Carter's face lit up. "Come on! Let's put Mira in and see if she likes it. Your opinion doesn't count—it's up to Mira!"
Ruby gave up protesting, lined the stroller with a soft blanket, and gently settled Mira inside.
The stroller had barely begun to roll when Mira's eyes widened in wonder and she burst into a bubbly giggle.
"See that? Mira likes it! Go on, sweetheart, tell your mom to say yes!" Mrs. Carter laughed, holding onto Mira's chubby, grasping hand with grandmotherly affection.
A gentle smile tugged at Ruby's lips, though her eyes shimmered with something distant and wistful.
It was such a lovely scene.
If only Grandma were still here—wouldn't she have doted on Mira just as much as Mrs. Carter did?
"Hey, sweetheart?"
Mrs. Carter, noticing Ruby's faraway look, waved a hand in front of her face.
