The thought sent a jolt through Cassian's chest.
His eyes narrowed the next moment.
Ruby's reaction had been far too strange.
And if she'd always been so obsessed with him, why would she betray him now?
For the first time in a year, he found himself really thinking about Ruby's prison sentence. A thousand questions pressed in, dense and unrelenting.
"Bennett."
Cassian spoke, his voice low and rough.
Bennett hurried over.
Cassian handed him the file he'd been holding. "Quietly investigate what happened a year ago. And this file—do everything you can to find the missing half."
"A file?" Bennett picked it up, brows furrowing in confusion. "Mr. Veyne, all the senior partners at Veyne & Co. have access to these files. If Miss Gennifer—"
Cassian shot him a look.
Bennett stopped mid-sentence, lowering his head with a small smile. "Understood."
There was a reason Bennett was his personal assistant—quick and efficient, he rushed out of the office at once.
Now only Cassian remained.
Stacks of paperwork still waited on his desk. He glanced over them and absently picked one up.
Almost unconsciously, he opened his phone.
The landlady had sent a photo.
A woman sat on a swing in the courtyard below the apartment, a child nestled in her arms. The sun caught the fall of her hair across her cheek, her profile serene and lovely.
Cassian felt as if something struck deep in his chest. Yet he couldn't tear his gaze from the woman in the photo.
Was there really more to what happened a year ago?
Otherwise, why did you look so hurt?
His mind flashed to the image of Ruby kneeling in the lobby of Veyne Tower—her misery, her stubbornly straight back, the last reserve of her pride.
Their marriage had been forced by his family, and he'd always resented how Ruby used his grandmother to pressure him, so even after the marriage went through, he'd treated her with cold detachment.
Yet, without realizing it, he'd started watching her more and more, even going so far as to arrange discreet protection for her.
Cassian's thoughts were a tangled mess, impossible to sort out.
His gaze drifted to the child in her arms.
He'd gone out of his way to look into the child's origins, but all he'd learned was that Ruby had given birth while in prison.
Who was the father? What had happened to Ruby behind bars? Everything seemed shrouded in mystery.
Cassian's heart tightened.
Meanwhile, in stark contrast to Cassian's silent turmoil, Gennifer stormed into her office, kicking a chair over in a fit of rage.
Her assistant stood stiffly nearby, afraid to make a sound.
"Cassian doesn't even like her, so why won't he just divorce her?"
