"He dragged you back here, and now he's lost in Gennifer's arms already."
Morgan didn't bother to hide his contempt for Cassian, nor the ridicule in his tone toward Ruby.
But Ruby only bit down on her lip and stayed silent.
Just as Morgan started to sense something was off, Ruby suddenly looked up. Her eyes were icy, and the way she stared at him was downright intimidating. "And you? Sneaking around taking photos? What makes you any better than him?"
She let out a cold laugh, then ground the photo beneath her heel. "Get out."
Morgan's face turned ashen. He stared at Ruby in disbelief, a question rising sharply in his mind.
Was this really the same gentle, reserved Ruby he remembered? Could a year behind bars really change someone this much?
She'd gone from a meek rabbit to a snarling beast—he barely recognized her.
Suddenly, the loud swish of curtains being yanked open cut through the tension.
Ruby stood up and pulled the curtains all the way across the floor-to-ceiling window, blocking Morgan's view entirely.
The thought of him standing outside her door made her skin crawl.
She let out a harsh breath through clenched teeth.
A moment later, the sound of Morgan's heavy shoes receded down the hall. The apartment fell into perfect silence.
It was as if all the strength had drained from Ruby. She collapsed onto the bed, limp.
Images from the photos—Gennifer wrapped around Cassian—looped through her mind.
She clenched her fists.
A year had passed.
She wasn't angry anymore. But she was fed up.
What did she even feel for Cassian now? What was the point of clinging to a marriage that was little more than a formality? Why drag her back by force, only to turn around and cozy up to Gennifer?
What did he take her for?
