Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 203

A cold, mocking smile flickered in her heart.

“What exactly are you trying to do?”

The man’s voice, raspy like gravel, sounded above her.

Ruby arched an eyebrow, taking a moment to smooth the sarcasm from her expression before looking up.

“Cassian, I just wanted to join Gennifer’s celebration. What could I possibly do?”

Her wide, innocent eyes gave nothing away, as if the woman who’d looked so stormy in Cassian’s arms a moment ago had never existed.

Dressed in a swan-white gown, her eyes clear and bright as crystal, Ruby looked so ethereal that, even though Cassian knew she wasn’t innocent, he found himself unable to accuse her of anything. In fact, for a fleeting second, he felt himself getting lost in those eyes, as if falling headlong into them.

The two of them stared at each other, oblivious to the rest of the world, their gazes locked in silent battle. They looked like a picture-perfect couple from a romance movie poster.

Inside, Ruby felt a wave of revulsion, but she kept her face smooth, innocence perfectly intact.

Gennifer stood off to the side, watching, her eyes suddenly brimming with tears. Whether it was anger or humiliation, even she wasn’t sure.

She couldn’t stand still any longer.

“Why are you here, Ruby? Why ruin my party?”

Ruby froze at her words, her hand still on her skirt.

Seizing the moment, Gennifer’s eyes welled up as she prepared to speak again, but Ruby beat her to it. “Gennifer, I came to your celebration with a sincere heart. How could you say I’m here to ruin anything?”

The pain in Ruby’s eyes was striking, impossible to ignore.

Gennifer faltered. It was true—since Ruby had arrived, she’d only said a few words from the stage, nothing that could be called sabotage. If anything, Gennifer was making a mountain out of a molehill.

Cassian’s gaze shifted to Gennifer, catching the stiffness in her expression.

A jolt of anxiety shot through her. The facts weren’t on her side, but how could she help it? Ruby was up to something, she was sure of it! Anyone would have reacted the same way.

Gennifer bit down hard on her lip.

Ruby’s lashes trembled like butterfly wings, her whole being fragile as porcelain. “Gennifer, maybe we’ve had our misunderstandings, but tonight I truly am happy for you. I never meant to cause you any confusion or distress… Maybe I shouldn’t have come at all.”

She let her face fall, pulling herself free from Cassian’s embrace. Lifting her dress, she strode away, her silhouette like a bird about to take flight, skirt billowing behind her like feathers in the wind.

A strange pang twisted Cassian’s heart. He barely thought before following her.

Gennifer stayed rooted to the spot, her face turning ashen.

Though the three had been standing in a quiet corner, more than a few guests had taken notice. Now, only Gennifer was left alone under their curious stares.
