But Ruby had been in prison just a year ago, and this child—judging by her size—couldn’t be more than a year old.
If she really was Mr. Veyne’s daughter, why hadn’t he announced it to the world? Was it possible Ruby had gotten pregnant while she was behind bars?
The more they thought about it, the more this explanation seemed to fit.
Their eyes shifted, lingering on Ruby with a mixture of curiosity and judgment.
Gennifer kept her polite, practiced smile in place, but inside, she was practically grinding her teeth to dust. Only when she caught the uneasy glances and stifled whispers around her did she feel a fleeting sense of satisfaction.
“Waaah!”
Suddenly, Mira’s patience gave out. Hungry and exhausted, the baby opened her mouth and let out a piercing wail.
“I need hot water.”
Ruby quickly scooped Mira into her arms, gently rocking her to soothe her as she shot Cassian a look and spoke—her tone brisk, almost commanding.
Cassian didn’t seem to mind. He called over the chef and a housekeeper to help.
Ruby handed Mira to them and went to prepare the formula herself.
Only once the bottle was in Mira’s mouth did the baby’s pitiful cries finally cease.
Mira drank quietly, content at last. Behind her, Gennifer shot a meaningful glance at someone.
“Miss Grayson, I’ve always admired you. When you were the lead counsel at Veyne & Co., you were my idol. I can’t believe you have a child now!”
The tranquil mood was suddenly broken by an excited voice.
Ruby glanced over, puzzled, and saw a plump, red-cheeked girl standing awkwardly by the corner—like it had taken all her courage just to speak.
“Thank you.”
Ruby didn’t ignore her. Though she found the situation a bit strange, she nodded at the girl in acknowledgment.
That tiny gesture made the girl’s eyes light up.
She took a deep breath and stepped forward. “Could I take a photo with you?”
Before Ruby could answer, the girl was already sidling closer, phone in hand.
But just as Ruby caught a glimpse of the pitch-black phone screen, an uneasy feeling shot through her.
Her instincts proved right. Almost the moment the girl drew near, Ruby felt a sudden force slam into her side—a brutal shove that sent her sprawling straight into the swimming pool.
Splash!
“Someone fell in!”
