Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 209

Sylas emerged from the shadows, clutching nothing but the broken stem of what had once been a champagne flute.

The shattered glass was a sharp reminder to them all.

What was supposed to be a triumphant celebration had ended in disaster.

Gennifer’s face was pale and unsettled, but the thought of that infant’s sudden appearance brought her a small measure of comfort.

She lowered her gaze, deep in thought, and when she looked up again, she found herself staring straight into a pair of cold, predatory eyes.

Before she could react, Sylas was already standing before her.

His strong arm shot out, hand closing like a vise around her throat. He leaned in, his threat barely more than a chilling whisper in her ear. “If you so much as lay a hand on her…”

His words trailed off as his grip tightened.

Gennifer’s face turned a mottled shade of purple, her breath coming in ragged gasps.

She glared up at him, defiant even as she struggled for air. “This has nothing to do with me!”

Sylas let out a cold, mirthless laugh. “It better not.”

With that, he tossed her aside and strode away.

He headed straight for the front gates of Northridge Manor, and beyond them, the entrance to Veyne Private Medical Center.

After such a scene, the rest of the guests scattered like startled birds, desperate to avoid getting caught up in the aftermath.

In a matter of minutes, the sprawling poolside and the open-air terrace were deserted, save for Gennifer and Renee.

“Gennifer, do you think everything will be alright? I thought Mr. Veyne couldn't stand Ruby. Why did he react like that tonight?” Renee’s voice was thin with anxiety. Images of Cassian’s tender concern for Ruby—and the flash of anger in his eyes just moments ago—flitted through her mind, leaving her with a delayed sense of fear.

Gennifer bit down on her lip, resentment simmering beneath her calm exterior, but forced herself to sound confident. “What are you afraid of? Cassian was just putting on a show of decency in front of everyone, nothing more.”

Renee seemed to relax a little at that, but a nervous edge lingered.

Lost in her thoughts, Renee suddenly remembered the “C” branded box she’d seen outside Ruby’s room.

Meanwhile, Ruby had been rushed to Veyne Private Medical Center.

The doctors quickly determined she’d passed out after nearly drowning and whisked her into surgery.

Cassian, as her family contact, waited anxiously outside, his eyes fixed on the glowing red “In Emergency” sign above the operating room. He looked like a man ready to jump out of his skin.

“How is she?” he demanded the moment the light outside the emergency room flicked off.

The doctor appeared relaxed. “She took in some water, but we’ve taken care of it. She’ll wake soon.”
