Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 30

A handful of young nurses clustered by the nurse's station, eyes shining with excitement as they whispered animatedly.

Meanwhile, in the private hospital's most exclusive VIP suite, Gennifer lounged on a pristine white leather chaise, one long, flawless leg elegantly crossed over the other. She pointed to a faint scratch on her ankle, her delicate brows pinched in a show of distress. With wide, pleading eyes, she turned to Cassian. "Cassian, will this get infected? It really hurts."

Cassian barely spared the injury a glance, his expression frosty. His voice was low and commanding. "Go fetch the hospital director. Tell him to assemble all the relevant specialists to examine Miss Grayson."

"Yes, Mr. Veyne! I'll see to it immediately!"

The hospital director arrived in a matter of minutes, nearly tripping over his own feet in his hurry. After hearing the situation, his smile faltered for a split second, but one look at Cassian—whose icy demeanor and status as the hospital's primary shareholder were not to be trifled with—and he straightened up, forced another accommodating grin, and rushed out again to make arrangements.

Elsewhere, Ruby noticed a sudden commotion in the pediatric waiting area. One by one, doctors from every department were being called away, all heading in the same direction.

She stood in confusion, clutching her feverish daughter in her arms, and looked for help from the head nurse, who was hurriedly gathering her things.

The nurse barely glanced at her, voice clipped and unsympathetic. "Just got word—Miss Gennifer scraped her ankle, and Mr. Veyne himself is here with her. Who do you think the hospital cares about at this point? Every available doctor's been pulled to check on Miss Grayson."

She eyed Ruby and the sick child in her arms with a cold detachment.

At this hour, Ruby's little girl was the only pediatric patient left. Tough luck. Of all days, they had to run into Miss Grayson?

Compared to someone like her, ordinary patients didn't stand a chance. If you played your cards right and managed to impress Mr. Veyne by looking after Miss Grayson, who knew how quickly your career might soar?

"Just wait here. Half an hour if you're lucky, maybe an hour or two if not. Once Miss Gennifer's situation is handled, the doctors will be back for your daughter."

With that, she clipped her badge to her coat and jogged off, vanishing into the crowd converging outside Gennifer's room.

Ruby hugged Mira tighter, feeling the child's body growing hotter by the minute as a creeping chill settled into her own bones.

But Mira was her life. No matter how hopeless or helpless she felt, she couldn't give up on her daughter.

She brushed Mira's forehead again—it was scorching, so hot that Ruby's fingers recoiled in fright.

Yet, despite the fever burning through her, Mira just gazed up at her mother, eyes brimming with tears, desperate and trusting.

It was Ruby's first time as a mother. She had no idea how to handle a fever like this, and the helplessness made her ache with guilt. But all the desperation in the world couldn't change the unfairness that walled her in.

Refusing to give up, she grabbed the sleeve of the last doctor rushing past, her voice trembling with urgency. "Please! Where are the pediatricians? This is just a scratch, surely she doesn't need the whole pediatric team?"
