Ruby's face was etched with worry as she cradled Mira's tiny body against her chest, her heart aching with helplessness.
Just moments ago, Mira had been semi-conscious, her little brows furrowing as she sniffled now and then. But now, her eyelids were clamped tightly shut, long lashes still, not so much as a flutter.
Panic rising, Ruby cupped a hand to Mira's forehead. The heat was so intense it felt as if her palm might blister.
She glanced desperately around the waiting area, but it had emptied, leaving her standing alone, chilled to the bone.
Cassian, if anything happens to Mira, I'll drag you down with me. We'll both pay for this.
She's just a child. Cassian, was it not enough for you to ruin the first half of my life? Now you have to make her suffer too?
Gritting her teeth, Ruby gathered her nerves and hurried toward the elevator at the end of the hall.
But before she could reach it, a wave of doctors surged toward her like a tide, sweeping her and Mira into a sea of bodies. She tightened her hold, arms forming a protective barrier around her daughter.
The crowd pressed in—doctors barking orders, hospital staff shoving impatiently, the commotion deafening.
The doctors, caught up in their own excitement, moved like bodyguards, clearing a path through the bystanders. When they reached Ruby, they didn't hesitate to shove her aside.
She was jostled so hard her vision blurred, hands grabbing at her shoulders and back. The air grew thin, and Mira, struggling to breathe in the crush, cracked her eyelids open to squint weakly, letting out a faint, plaintive wail.
Ruby tried to turn toward the stairs, but the crowd was impenetrable.
"Hush, Mira, sweetheart. Don't cry, baby, don't cry…" Ruby murmured, voice trembling, cocooning Mira as tightly as she could.
"Don't block the way! If you mess up Mr. Veyne and Miss Grayson's appointment, you can't afford the consequences!" barked a man at the front—a hospital director, judging by his authority. He glanced at the cheap, worn clothes swaddling the baby in Ruby's arms and shoved her to the side with an impatient scowl.
Ruby stumbled, nearly falling. The second she heard "Mr. Veyne," she froze, stricken.
