Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 34

All Ruby wanted was for Mira to live a safe, peaceful life—she didn't wish for fortune or glory, just happiness and security for her little girl.

"This time, when Mira fell ill, I couldn't have managed without everyone's help. I'll never forget your kindness," Ruby said earnestly, cradling Mira in her arms as she tried to bow in gratitude. Before she could complete the gesture, Pamela, quick as ever, stepped in to stop her. "Oh, come on, you only just got over your own fever. No need for the theatrics—go on, take the baby and get some rest."

Pamela gave Ruby a sympathetic look. "You really have it tough. It's just the two of you, and we're all women here. Of course we want to help however we can."

She thumped her chest in a show of solidarity, then bustled around gathering the other matriarchs from the beds, shepherding everyone back to their own rooms for the night.

Outside, night had fallen thick and deep—so dark you could barely see your hand in front of your face. Pamela tiptoed to the door, meaning to slip away, but paused with her hand on the handle. She turned back, her voice gentle but firm. "Ruby, you're still so young. You've got your whole life ahead of you. Raising a child alone isn't easy. When Mira grows up, she'll want to know about her father. It's a hard road for a child without one."

Ruby stiffened; she knew exactly what Pamela was implying.

She was encouraging Ruby to consider remarrying.

Pamela must have sensed her discomfort, because she quickly added, "But there's no rush. All of us adore Mira, and if you ever need help, we'll always be here."

With that, Pamela patted Ruby's shoulder and slipped out, leaving the room quiet and still. Now, only Ruby and Mira remained.

Ruby gazed down at the tiny bundle in her arms. Mira sucked contentedly on her pacifier, her big eyes sparkling with mischief as she flashed her mother a toothless grin.

Ruby held her closer, her arms tightening protectively.

She knew Pamela meant well, but after everything that had happened with Cassian, Ruby couldn't bring herself to trust anyone easily.

Early the next morning, Ruby took a day off work so she could bring Mira to Central Medical Center for a follow-up appointment.

Mira was lively again, but Ruby couldn't shake her worry—what if there were lingering complications?

She had just picked up her signed leave slip and was heading out when she ran into Pamela, who was grabbing her coat on her way to work.

Pamela took one look at the paperwork and nodded, understanding at once. "Don't worry about work. Your child comes first. She's so little—don't risk leaving anything untreated."

Ruby was touched by her concern and nodded gratefully.
