"Mira Grayson."

At the sound of the nurse's call, Ruby gathered Mira in her arms and carried her into the exam room.

Once the checkup was finished, Ruby stepped back out and settled into one of the waiting room chairs, anxious for the results. Her gaze wandered absently around the clinic until, all of a sudden, it froze on the entrance to the ultrasound suite across the hall.

Gennifer was there, clutching a stack of ultrasound images, her brows drawn together in worry. Next to her stood a man whose striking looks made people glance twice.

When he turned, Ruby got a good look at his face. In an instant, it felt as if her mind had detonated—everything went blank except for one word.

Morgan.

Why in the world was Morgan here with Gennifer?

Ruby checked the sign above the door again, just to make sure she wasn't seeing things. But her mind was already connecting the dots—she couldn't forget the rumors tearing through social media these past two days.

Was Gennifer here for a prenatal checkup?

A bold suspicion flashed through Ruby's mind. No matter how she tried to rationalize it, nothing else made sense.

Her vision sharpened, a cynical twist forming at her lips.

So, the rumors were true. These two had been in cahoots all along.

She couldn't help but recall the day she'd desperately decided to seek out Cassian.

Morgan had said all the right things, pretending deep devotion, but in reality, perhaps he'd only gotten close to her to help Gennifer and Cassian get together. Maybe he was even willing to sacrifice his own happiness for Gennifer's sake.

What a generous spirit, she thought bitterly.

Her mocking smile lingered as she caught Morgan's gaze from across the waiting room.

The smile froze. Ruby stiffened, quickly schooling her features into indifference and turning away.

Pretending she didn't know him.

Morgan's chest tightened painfully. He knew he couldn't let Gennifer notice Ruby, and yet he couldn't help but look at her. Ruby kept her head down, a few loose strands of hair falling across her pale neck.

She refused to spare him so much as a glance.
