From the start of this footage right up to the very end, no one ever lifted the white sheet covering the body.
Ruby leaned in, giving Hayley a gentle pat on the back. “Speed it up. Let’s run through all the security tapes from here.”
Hayley heard Ruby’s voice beside her—soft, almost distant. She didn’t quite understand the urgency, but her fingers moved faster across the keyboard all the same.
Ruby watched the scenes flicker by, her gaze fixed on the hospital gurney as it appeared again and again.
A white sheet covered the body, the outline beneath unmistakably human. But she watched the entire video with painstaking care, and the truth was clear: the sheet never budged, not once.
“Hayley, you said earlier there were no signs of tampering in the footage from the morgue. Are you sure?”
Ruby narrowed her eyes.
Hayley nodded without hesitation. “Of course. Spotting digital edits can be tricky, but at my level, it’s pretty straightforward.”
Ruby pressed her lips together, eyes never leaving the screen, lost in thought.
Maybe she’d been looking at this the wrong way from the start.
Hanley had the nerve to throw a grand funeral, to show surveillance footage in front of everyone and claim it proved his case—he must have something up his sleeve, something he trusted completely.
Now, Ruby had Hayley freeze the frame on the morgue.
“What if,” Ruby said suddenly, “the body under that sheet was never Violet at all?”
The air seemed to grow colder.
Fanny frowned, exchanging a nervous glance with Hayley, who had gone stiff at her computer.
A shiver ran down Fanny’s spine.
Sylas let out a low chuckle, the corner of his mouth curling up.
“From the moment Gennifer walked free to Hanley’s extravagant funeral today, there’s only been—what? Three days?” His voice was deep and unsettlingly relaxed, a stark contrast to the tension in the room. “That’s barely any time at all.”
His words hung in the air, a hook for everyone’s thoughts.
Even Fanny’s face grew serious as she thought it through. She rubbed her arms, suddenly covered in goosebumps. “Ruby said there’s no way they could’ve dug up security footage from ten years ago in just a couple of days, but most of these tapes don’t show any sign of tampering. That can only mean…”
“These videos were prepared over a decade ago,” Ruby finished for her.
