Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 438

“Sylas, right now, you’re the one asking me for a favor.”

Cassian’s gaze was sharp, nearly venomous as he looked up; his words landed with a bite, each syllable laced with disdain.

Sylas could only rub the bridge of his nose, letting his smile fade. “Just remember what you promised me.”

He tossed out the reminder and made for the door, but just as he reached it, something seemed to occur to him. He paused, turned back. “I heard you brought those witnesses Hanley found back to the office.”

Sylas returned to his seat, eyes fixed on Cassian. “What are you planning to do?”

Cassian’s thick brows lifted slightly, the chill in his stare deepening. “That’s not your concern.”

“Uncle, you owe Rue too much. Trying to make it up to her now—isn’t it a bit late?”

Arms folded, Sylas spoke with the air of someone who’d seen right through Cassian’s intentions.

As his words faded, Cassian pressed his lips together, an icy glint flashing in his eyes, shadowed by a fleeting trace of regret. He nearly snapped the nib of his new fountain pen in his grip.

“Sylas, you’d better start worrying about yourself. Going back to the Cunningham family this time won’t be so easy.”

Cassian let out a cold scoff and shot Bennett a look. “Show him out.”

Bennett stepped forward at once. “Mr. Cunningham—”

Sylas raised a hand, cutting him off. “I was leaving anyway. No need to rush.”

He narrowed his eyes, then stood, rapping his knuckles on Cassian’s desk. “Why not let me help with the questioning, Uncle?”

Sylas met Cassian’s eyes, gaze unwavering. “I won’t tell her. If we get any answers, you get the credit.”

Cassian’s stare hardened, but as he looked at his once-obedient nephew, doubt flickered in his mind.

Bennett hadn’t gotten anything useful out of those three witnesses. Even if Cassian tried himself, he doubted things would go any differently.

Sylas, on the other hand, had always been close to Ruby. If anyone knew the real story, it would be him.

And besides…

“What did you take after the funeral?”

Cassian went straight to the point.

Sylas hesitated, surprise flashing in his eyes before he quickly masked it.

“Don’t think I don’t know,” Cassian said coldly. “Spit it out.”

Sylas knew there was no use hiding it. He shrugged. “The flash drive Hanley played that video from at the funeral.”

“So you’re here because her people found something in the files?”

Cassian’s eyes were razor sharp.
