“Is it alright now?”
Once Fanny tucked her ID back into her purse, the woman in charge regained her composure. The surprise faded from her face, replaced by a stern, tight-lipped seriousness. “Technically, we’re supposed to get approval from higher up. Do you have some time to wait? I’ll go make a report—it should be fine, but that’s the procedure.”
Fanny and Ruby exchanged a glance. Fanny waved her hand dismissively. “Go ahead.”
The woman strode away, the click of her heels sharp and decisive as it echoed down the corridor.
It didn’t take long before she returned, this time accompanied by an elderly woman who shuffled behind her in small, careful steps.
“This is our current director,” the woman said, introducing the newcomer. “I explained the situation, and she insisted on meeting you herself.”
She offered them a polite nod.
Ruby and Fanny didn’t react much.
The director, hunched with age, looked as though a strong wind might topple her, but her eyes were startlingly bright. “Would you mind telling me the purpose of your visit?”
“I’m afraid we can’t disclose that for now,” Fanny said, shaking her head. “But I’ve already confirmed our credentials. We’d appreciate your cooperation.”
“I see…” The director didn’t press. Instead, she gestured for them to follow. “Come with me, please. The records room is off-limits to most, so Olivia, you stay here in the security office until we return.”
She gave Olivia a firm look before leading Ruby and Fanny down the hall.
As the door to the records room swung open, a heavy, musty scent filled the air—evidence of years with hardly anyone coming and going.
Rows of files lined the shelves, each sealed and labeled.
The director navigated the room without hesitation, heading straight for the old security footage.
“These are the tapes you’re looking for—all of June from that year.”
Ruby glanced over the archive, then nodded. “Thank you, truly.”
The director waved off the thanks, but sweat had already started to bead on her forehead.
Ruby noticed how tense the woman seemed, and exchanged a look with Fanny.
Fanny gave her a quick, reassuring wink.
The three of them returned to the security office, where the director instructed Olivia to set up a computer for Ruby and Fanny.
Within moments, the screen flickered to life, playing the grainy footage they’d spent so long searching for.
“That’s it—it’s this room!” Ruby’s voice was taut with focus.
