Ruby frowned, eyes narrowing in concentration.

Olivia nodded and quickly brought up the footage on her computer. Within seconds, Domingo appeared on screen.

He stopped at a corner a little ways from the payment counter, reached into his pocket, and pulled out a thick stack of cash—so stuffed it looked heavy in his hands.

If every bill was a hundred, there had to be at least fifteen grand there.

Ruby’s expression sharpened instantly.

Fifteen grand wasn’t a small sum—especially not a decade ago.

How could Domingo, just an ordinary employee at the local crematorium, suddenly have that kind of money?

He peeled off a portion to pay at the front desk, then retreated to a quiet corner out of sight.

Suddenly, he got a phone call. Even over video, it was obvious how deferential he was to whoever was on the other end—bobbing his head, plastering on a nervous smile, practically bowing even though he couldn’t be seen.

When the call finally ended, he let out a long breath, the obsequious smile fading. If you looked closely, his shoulders were trembling.

Ruby paused the footage and hovered the mouse over the phone in Domingo’s hand, zooming in on the caller ID. The contact name was bold and unmistakable—Boss Grayson.

Ruby snapped a picture of the monitor with her phone, then asked Olivia to rewind and pull up the feed from Rosalie’s hospital room, speeding it up to scan through.

In a few minutes, they watched the moment Rosalie, after giving birth, was quietly taken away by Domingo.

Ruby and Fanny straightened from where they’d been hunched over the screen, neither showing much emotion.

“Make me a copy of those key clips we just watched.”

Ruby gave Olivia’s shoulder a gentle pat, her tone soft but firm.

Olivia hesitated, glancing up at her director for approval.

When the director nodded, Olivia got to work.

Once the flash drive was in Ruby’s hand, the hospital investigation was finally over.

Ruby and Fanny walked out of the hospital side by side.

“What was that ID you showed them earlier?” Ruby asked as they stepped outside, curiosity getting the better of her.

Fanny smiled. “Oh, that? I borrowed it from my boss. Not only does it show my credentials, but it grants me special investigative authority too.”

Ruby nodded, not quite understanding, but she couldn’t help glancing at Fanny, her gaze lingering with gratitude.

If Fanny went to the trouble of borrowing something that important, it couldn’t have been simple. Yet she’d done it for her...
