Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 47

While Bennett was still on his way, Cassian finished signing every contract Cameron Lockridge had brought—every one except for the divorce papers, which sat untouched, his signature space glaringly blank.

He set down his pen. Only the divorce agreement remained unsigned.

When Bennett entered, he found Cassian brooding, his gaze fixed on the single sheet of paper before him.

"Mr. Veyne?" Bennett prompted gently.

Cassian snapped out of his thoughts, then swiftly signed the divorce agreement, his hand steady and sure.

No hesitation at all.

Bennett leaned in, and when he glimpsed the bold words "Divorce Agreement," his eyes went wide. He stuttered, "Th-this… Mr. Veyne, is this—?"

He rubbed his eyes, unable to believe what he saw, but there it was: Ruby's signature, clear and unmistakable on the last page.

Then Cassian slid the divorce agreement back into the stack of documents. Bennett, ever sharp-eyed, caught a look at the signature Cassian had added.

Cassian.

Bennett's mind spun. There was no way Mr. Veyne had changed his name. He looked up and met Cassian's cold, impassive eyes.

The two left the office, one after the other. Cassian tossed the stack of documents to Cameron Lockridge without a care. "Since you're so considerate to your team, Attorney Lockridge, I figured I shouldn't keep you waiting."

He curled his lips into a faint smile, though his dark eyes were empty, as deep and bottomless as a well.

Cameron Lockridge felt a chill crawl up his arms, goosebumps prickling his skin. Mr. Veyne was always hard to read, but there was something different about his eyes this time—something unsettling, almost predatory. The unease Cameron thought he'd put to rest began stirring again in his chest.

Had Mr. Veyne… realized something?

Cameron shot Cassian a furtive glance, but found no clue in his expression. With no choice, he accepted the documents.

"I'll be heading out now, Mr. Veyne."

As Cameron turned to leave, Cassian narrowed his eyes, a dangerous light glinting in their depths.

"Follow him," Cassian ordered quietly. "Find her."

Cameron Lockridge had no idea he was being tailed. Once in his car, he pulled the divorce agreement from the pile and checked the signatures.

Cassian had signed. Cameron let out a slow breath, relief washing over him. He gripped the papers tighter and started the engine, heading first to the old house.

The movie was almost over by the time he arrived. He didn't bother double-checking the agreement. Instead, he dropped it off at home before hurrying to the theater.

Ruby, not wanting to keep Cameron waiting outside, left early with Mira in her arms.

"Is Mira sleepy?" Cameron asked softly, lowering his voice as he peered into the car seat where the baby, snug in her blanket, slept peacefully.

Ruby smiled and nodded, settling into the backseat with Mira.

The city lights blurred past the window. Neither of them spoke; a silent understanding hung in the air.

Ruby gazed quietly out the window. Night had fallen completely, and the passing shadows of trees flickered over the sidewalk.

Mira was so light, so small. Ruby looked down at her daughter with tenderness, missing the fact that, not far away, in a luxury car parked discreetly in the shadows, a pair of dark, intense eyes were watching her too.

Eyes like a wolf stalking its prey—cold, obsessive, relentless.
