A terrifying suspicion suddenly surged up in Frieda’s mind—one so wild, so unbearable, she couldn’t even bring herself to believe it. She shook her head hard, trying to force the thought away.

She had no idea how she managed to stumble out of the office in a daze. By the time she stepped outside, the sun was already sinking low, leaving just a sliver of golden-red on the horizon.

“Mom…”

Frieda was wandering aimlessly down the street, lost in thought, when a faint voice brushed past her ear. It sounded so much like Gennifer.

She paused for a second but kept walking, telling herself she was losing it—maybe she was so upset, her mind was playing tricks on her. There was no way she’d just hear Gennifer’s voice out of nowhere.

She pressed her fingers to her temples, trying to clear her head, but the voice only grew louder.

“Mom! Help me…”

This time, the cry was desperate, as if whoever was calling her had used up every last ounce of strength.

Frieda spun around in shock and, in the shadowy corner of the street, caught sight of a figure she never expected to see.

“Gennifer!”

She gasped and rushed forward, coming to a stop right in front of her.

But was this really a person? If she hadn’t recognized Gennifer’s clothes—and that voice—she would never have believed this was her daughter. She looked more like a scarecrow than a living girl.

The dress Frieda had picked out for her with such care was now little more than rags, the hem torn into strips. But what truly made Frieda’s blood run cold were the bruises and bloody scratches marring Gennifer’s exposed skin—dark, vicious marks biting deep into her arms.

Frieda had lived a sheltered life, always pampered and protected. She had never seen anything so horrifying before.

Her hands trembled as she crouched down, afraid to even touch the broken girl before her. “Gennifer, what happened? What on earth happened to you? Who did this?”

Her voice shook so badly, she forgot all about what had happened at work just moments ago.
