Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 511

“Ma’am?”

Frieda had barely stepped up to the front desk and stated her name before the receptionist paused, giving her a thorough once-over, confusion and skepticism written all over her face.

“Excuse me, ma’am, but you can’t just claim to be the CEO’s wife to get in without an appointment,” the woman said, her tone sharp and righteous.

Frieda froze for a second, then her brows drew together in irritation. “What’s that supposed to mean? Are you accusing me of pretending to be Mrs. Grayson?”

She slapped her hand down on the front desk, glaring daggers at the receptionist. The whole ordeal with Hanley’s affair had already left her on edge. Now, to be challenged by a company employee only made her simmer with anger.

The receptionist, confronted by Frieda’s fiery expression and commanding presence, hesitated. But...

If she remembered correctly, the woman who’d come in before as Mrs. Grayson looked nothing like the one standing in front of her now. She frowned, her whole face scrunching in discomfort.

“Give me the direct line to the chairman’s office!” Frieda demanded, voice sharp with impatience.

At that, the receptionist hurried forward, protectively covering the company directory. “I’m sorry, ma’am! If you want to see Chairman Grayson, you’ll need to schedule an appointment first!”

“Lacey, why don’t you help with something else?”

Suddenly, a new voice cut in—like a lifeline tossed across a stormy sea.

Lacey turned gratefully toward the approaching figure. “Manager, thank goodness you’re here!” She quickly handed over the directory and, like a startled rabbit, scurried away.

The “manager” was a woman dressed in a sleek black blouse and a fitted red pencil skirt. Frieda eyed her outfit with a slight frown, but said nothing. Instead, she lifted her chin. “I’m here to see Gennifer.”

The manager flashed a bright, accommodating smile and gestured toward the elevators. “Of course, right this way.”

Frieda followed, her gaze sweeping over the surroundings, taking in every detail. She didn’t notice the flicker of contempt that crossed the manager’s face.

The truth was, The Grayson Group had been quietly acquired by Ruby, though Ruby hadn’t yet convened the shareholder meeting to formalize the transfer. Frieda, at best, was nothing more than the “former Mrs. Grayson.” The fact that she waltzed in here as if she still owned the place was almost laughable.
